  • The key to implementing an organizational culture that does not tolerate unethical behaviour comes down to individual value choices. The good news is that it appears more organizations are attempting to implement a code of conduct and become more responsible. For government and business, the code of conduct now defines the framework within which all employees must work. How the leader behaves at the top sets the standard that will cascade down to all levels of management and employees. All ethical behaviour has to start at the directors' level. There must be transparency and honesty in the decision-making process, and the department must be committed to dealing with ethical issues - no sweeping stuff under the rug. It all comes down to sincere intent. If the intent is really to be ethi...

  • In addition, policies related to workplace violence need to be accompanied by additional HR policies that will establish clear expectations for employee behaviour on a number of fronts. This includes drugs, alcohol or weapons in the workplace, harassment and discrimination, workplace health and safety and a general code of ethics. At the same time, managers, supervisors and all employees for that matter, should receive general training that will help them to recognize the early warning signals that could lead to potential violence. A failure to recognize the risk and/or avoiding and neglecting to intervene will lead to employee fear and anxiety, reduce productivity and gener...

  • I doubt that many employees actually pay attention to the amount of time they waste at work and how this affects productivity. I doubt even more that these employees would consider themselves as "thieves of time." But just as we are all sometimes liars, many of us are also thieves of time. But, to be truthful, we typically don't give this even the slightest of thought. In fact, I am certain that most employees consider themselves to be honest, hardworking employees who put in a hard day's work and are loyal to their employers. I honestly don't think most employees realize what constitutes theft from the workplace and how they might be cheating their employer of productivity. I also don't think most employees realize the full impact on an organization of their behaviour and even more so,...

  • This study investigates the inter- and intra-comparison of life and work values held by managerial employees working in large and well-established organisations in Singapore. Three groups of workers, namely the Singaporean Chinese, Japanese expatriates and PRC Chinese expatriates were surveyed to measure life and work values and job satisfaction. Our findings have demonstrated that there are significant variations in the life values and work values amongst the three nationalities. However, the Japanese and PRC Chinese expatriates shared similar life values, thus exemplifying the effects of Confucian Dynamism. At the intra-level, differences in the occupational level exert little influence on the life values of the three national samples and the work values of the Singaporeans; differenc...
