The ever-growing concern about AIDS worldwide has increased the importance of understanding the disproportionate way in which the epidemic affects the lives of women. A cause for concern is the findings of a number of studies which indicate that the level of HIV infection among married women in sub-Saharan Africa has increased dramatically in comparison to the infection rate of those who are single. This article focuses on findings from a qualitative study done in South Africa during 2005/2006, which aimed to shed light on the perceptions and experiences of Afrikaans-speaking married women with regard to living in a society characterized by a high HIV prevalence rate. The main focus of the study fell on the women's perceptions of self-risk of becoming HIV infected. It was found that, al...

The Meeting House has become well-known to many Torontonians because of its informal style and absence of defensiveness in the face of other points of view. [Bruxy Cavey], who looks a bit like a 1960s hippie with long, flowing locks, has written a book called The End of Religion, and the church's website carries in prominent type, "Has religion turned you off?" In his teaching, he works hard at overcoming barriers to faith while remaining surprisingly orthodox. It's a church for people "who are not into church," he says. The most recent extension of The Meeting House was opened in Ottawa last fall. In Kelowna, B.C., the Willow Park Church, a Mennonite Brethren congregation with teaching pastor Mark Burch, meets at four campuses scattered around the area. A leadership staff of 14 work ...

NAIROBI, Kenya -- The top U.S. diplomat for Africa said Wednesday that the post-election violence in Kenya amounted to "ethnic cleansing" and that both President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga should be doing more to calm tensions. Jendayi Frazer, assistant secretary of state of African affairs, said she had met with Kenyans who described being chased from their homes by organized groups that were "trying to get other ethnic groups to leave certain areas.
The paper mainly analyzes the importance of ethnic dress from the perspective of the application of ethnic costume's form and various features in modern fashion design to fully acknowledge that national costumes are the inexhaustible source of inspiration for designing creation. Only by understanding, inheriting and enhancing the essence of ethnic costume, we can transfer it into the culture of modern fashion design, and gain enlightenment to integrate the culture of traditional ethnic dress with that of modern fashion.

It is common for parents/families in traditional settings, whether in Africa or China, to pair their children/members in marriage often without their consent. This specific mate selection practice, arrangement, is used to designate marriages in these settings: the so-called arranged marriages. Observations about this mate selection practice are then posited as conclusive evidence of change in these marriages. This paper attempts an exploratory clarification of marriages in traditional Africa in two ways. First, it uses the marriage system of the Okrikans to reveal that arranged and non-arranged marriages coexist, each administered by and organized around distinct institutions, with differing consequences for family membership, inheritance and other important issues. Second, it breaks do...
