The red ensign is a very appropriate flag for Manitoba. It has the provincial coat of arms with the bison -- a carefully designed symbol for our province, which evokes our pre-European history. The Union Jack has flown over parts of Manitoba since 1670 when the Hudson's Bay Company was granted the territory. Our flag is not a relic of an outdated empire, rather it is the living symbol of a proud province. For most of us we have lived with this flag our entire lives, it is in our blood. To replace it now would be foolish. Besides, nothing ever remains the same and neither shall Manitoba. In order to understand Canada as a nation, one has to trace Britain's colonial history, the mapping of "Canada," and the making of it as a British nation, for as Jane M.
