We examine why studies reach contradictory conclusions concerning the value of the household life cycle model as a predictive tool in consumer expenditure research. Using a database of roughly 14,000 Canadian households, we find that household life cycle variables do not generally enhance prediction over a more parsimonious model containing a basic set of socioeconomic and demographic variables, even when comparing less aggregated to more aggregated expenditure categories. However, they do enhance prediction for categories that are defined such that the typical users of the category fall into a fairly narrow age range. The theoretical and applied significance of our findings are discussed and directions for future research are offered.

This study investigates the extent of capitalization of pre-production expenditure for the 2003 financial year by 152 mining sector firms listed in Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Level of capitalization was associated with higher leverage, lower profitability and reporting a negative earnings figure if pre-production expenditure was written off instead of capitalized. Similar to firms in the oil and gas industry, explorer firms were more likely to capitalize preproduction expenditure than producer firms. Although policy choice is relatively transparent, it appears that managers of producer firms are responding to incentives to present a more favorable view of their financial position and performance.

This study investigates the use of accounting policies contained in national standards or IAS that are not acceptable under US GAAP. Four policy areas (measurement of tangible assets, available-for-sale marketable securities and intangible assets; and the treatment of research and development expenditure) were considered for 506 listed firms from the United Kingdom (UK), Australia, France, Germany and Japan at 1999/2000. The main use of policies equivalent to IAS "options" was among firms from the UK and Australia. The study outlined how IAS adoption in 2005 (in the UK, France, Germany and Australia) and further IASB/FASB convergence activities will impact on policies currently used by firms from the sample countries.

CN's equipment spending is targeted to reach about $350 million in 2007 to tap growth opportunities and improve the quality of the fleet. This will include about $200 million for locomotives, covering the acquisition of 65 new units and continued spending on other improvements to the core fleet.
CN's 2007 (capital expenditure) program -- equal to almost 20 per cent of our revenues -- represents a major commitment to running a safe, efficient and productive railway for our customers and the communities in which we operate," CEO E. Hunter Harrison said in a release.

A study examines a sample of 13 accounts from the bursar's office at Durham Cathedral Priory covering the period 1278-1398. Sources of receipts, types of expenditure, and the format of the accounts have been described. An analysis of the accounts has allowed the calculation of the net surplus or deficit generated each year. This has revealed that once uncollected arrears have been excluded from receipts, the net surplus or deficit was of a very modest amount, and it appears that actual receipts and expenditure were very closely matched, indicating careful monitoring of the cash position. The accounts are largely concerned with receipts and expenditure, but an awareness of balance sheet issues is evidenced by the survival of schedules listing debtors and creditors. These and other schedu...

Businesses are looking for some quick, short-term economic injection that will generate economy. The budget announced, under the commitment of accelerated infrastructure and new investment, a $12-billion investment over the next two years in "shovel-ready" projects. This will not only generate an economic stimulus for construction, engineering, architects and material manufacturers, but the indirect affect on support services to these projects will begin as soon as the shovel hits the ground.
Most importantly, business needs certainty. The area of greatest weakness is the projected deficit over the next five years. We need the government to continue to commit to pursuit of a surplus budget position. It will only be able to achieve that through significant expenditure reduction once the ...

Another welcome change to the SR&ED program was the introduction of a new provincial credit in Alberta. For taxation years ending after December 31, 2008, Alberta taxpayers are entitled to a 10% refundable credit on up to $4 million per year of SR&ED eligible expenditures in that province. As with the federal expenditure limit, the $4,000,000 Alberta expenditure limit must be shared among all associated corporations in a group.
