January's election marked not only a change in government, but also a significant change in the face of the federal-urban policy debate. Unlike prime ministers [Jean Chr]étien or [Paul Martin], Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper does not appear to see urban Canada as the next federal frontier. After fewer than nine months of Conservative government, there has been a largely wholesale shift away from the rhetoric of a "federal urban agenda." Evidence of this shift can be seen in the reaction (or lack thereof) to the public release of the final report of the Federal External Advisory Committee on Cities and Communities. The committee, chaired by Mike Harcourt, was established under the Martin government in February of 2004. Its recommendations are far-reaching, including a "double...

This paper documents the performance differences between Wholly-Owned Subsidiaries (WOS) and Joint Ventures (JV) in electrical and electronics industry in Thailand for the period of 2000 to 2004. Unlike other studies, we analyse the performance differences using DuPont analysis. The impact of capital structure on the profitability of WOS and JV is further studied in this paper. We find that WOS have significantly higher sales growth, have more efficient asset management and carry higher debt ratios. On the other hand, JV are more efficient in cost control and thus have better performance in term of ROS. Consistent with managerial overinvestment agency theory, debt ratio is positive and highly significantly related to ROE. In addition, better asset management and higher leverage of WOS l...

Political risk analysis primarily receives attention for foreign direct investment (FDI) but only rarely for exporting. We examine how exporters and foreign direct investors evaluate the relative importance of political risk factors. We provide a rationale for exporters to evaluate political risk factors for FDI and for foreign direct investors to evaluate political risk factors for exporting. Survey data were collected from Canadian exporters and foreign direct investors and capture the distinctive nature of salient factors for exporting and FDI. We offer unique insights on the evolutionary character of political risk that are of practical value for both exporting and FDI.

Slavery was a dominant phenomenon of antiquity. Gradually it has declined in the modern world. The blessings of modern moral attitudes and virtues were instrumental for these structural changes. Recently, child trafficking, especially female child trafficking has become a painful reality in Bangladesh. This child trafficking has been occurring internally and also across the border to India, Pakistan, Malaysia and many Middle Eastern countries. The rate of growth of this trafficking has been increasing alarmingly in this country. Every year several hundred (under the age of eighteen) children are being trafficked abroad. These trafficked children are adapting to a new life style which is different from the life style had they lived in their normal (life style which they supposed to follo...
