This is the approach that we employed, and we began contacting fish almost immediately. Casting Rapala X-Raps, Husky Jerks and rattle baits, we were fortunate to catch 25 fish in just over three hours. Most of the pike came from shallow water, very close to areas where they most likely spawned. While many fish were most certainly not giants by any stretch, there were two that nearly broke the 40 inch mark. Interestingly, the largest we saw never touched the bait, but either followed in lazily or attempted to strike and missed altogether. These are the true monster fish that will become very catchable any day now as the water warms and their level of activity and aggressiveness increases.
For those who are looking for some fun and accessible spring fishing action, pike may be just what t...

During the summer, muskies tend to be sought after in predictable locations with fairly standard baits. Most anglers, myself included, cast for them at this time of year with an array of baits ranging from basic bucktails (the No. 1 fish-producing bait according to records), hard plastic crankbaits, topwaters and the new generation rubber baits like Bulldawgs.
Fall fishing for muskies sees a few changes in approach -- the greatest being that trolling becomes a more frequently used tool in the arsenal. By trolling, an angler increases the odds of contacting fish simply by covering more water. The theory is that muskies are beginning to roam more freely at this time of year, so it stands to reason that we roam as well. This isn't to say the best approach is to drop the bait in the water a...
