You can see the first problem by walking into the parking lot of a crowded mall and pushing the button on your fob. When you push the button, your fob sends out a radio signal that can travel about several hundred feet. Something like a hundred cars might be in the range of your fob's radio signal. All of those cars are going to see your fob's signal and ignore it. Only your car is going to respond to your key fob.
So when the fob sends a random number, the car receives it and unlocks the doors. Now, both the car and the fob pick the next random number for the next time that the fob is used. Since they are both synchronized, they will both pick the same random number. The next time you press your fob, your doors unlock again and the process repeats.
So what happens if your child is hype...

OK, now that we've mourned the loss of the wagon and hatch body styles in Mazda's 6 lineup, it's time to take a look at what we've gained.
One look at the 6's new slippery shape, and it's immediately obvious we're looking at a substantially bigger car. And, unfortunately, it also does look more generic, particularly from the rear. A nearly horizontal rear window and short, high decklid are standard features of today's Japanese sedans. Uplevel GT models do get wild-looking dual exhaust tip surrounds that, if not functional, do a pretty good job of adding a sporty flair to the car's derriere.
I am a fan of the push-button start systems, though, which allow someone with a key fob in their pocket or purse to walk up to the car, unlock it, start it up, and start driving without ever touching...

While I traditionally haven't extended these kudos to the company's SUV and truck offerings, Mazda has finally come out with a car-based "crossover" SUV that appeals to drivers. It's the new CX-7, a five-passenger people mover with a six-speed manumatic transmission and a version of the MazdaSpeed 6's turbocharged four-banger under the hood. Look for the seven-passenger, V-6-powered CX-9 in Mazda showrooms by the end of this calendar year.
Our tester was an all-wheel-drive GT equipped with the $1,000 luxury package, which adds a nine-speaker Bose audio system with six-disc changer and surround sound. Also part of the package is Mazda's version of keyless go, dubbed Intelligent Key System. Instead of a traditional key, what drivers get is a remote fob about the size of a credit card but ...

We had moved about 20 minutes outside of KC when the next incident happened. You have probably all seen pictures of the LAVs and the cannon on the front? Well, we have the ability to traverse the cannon in all directions. When we are driving, we usually alternate sides that we are pointed at, to maximize coverage. For example, my vehicle will take from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock. The vehicle behind will take from 12 o'clock to 9 o'clock, etc. Anyway, one of the LAVs passed too close to a truck, hitting the truck. Fortunately, the truck was static, and no-one was in the front of it. The turret was knocked right around, hitting the two soldiers standing in the back. Both were seriously injured and were sent back to Canada for reconstructive surgery -- but both will be okay. The highpoint of ...

Because I live in rural Manitoba and am not currently affected by mandatory immobilizers, I wanted to pre-register my disgust at MPI's assertion that it offers "free immobilizers" and "cheap or free installation", which is a half-truth at best.
My letter from MPI offering me a "free immobilizer" went in the trash months ago when I learned what the cost of free really was. While the immobilizer itself was free, the cost of installation was not due to the fact that I have a remote starter (which I am not doing without in our winters). As well, it only included one transponder fob, which is required to start the vehicle with additional fobs costing in the area of $20 to $30. And to top it off, there were only a handful of authorized shops in rural Manitoba, which leads to travel costs and...

Equipped with the largest engine of those tested, a six-speed transmission, on-demand all-wheel drive, stability control, traction control, electronic brake force assist, rain-sensing wipers, front wiper de-icer and suspension components that utilize twin-tube gas-filled dampers, the Veracruz is ready for the competition. The suspension produces a ride quality that is an acceptable compromise between comfort and firmness. Handling is better than the Enclave but falls short of the trio-leading CX-9. Acceleration runs placed the Veracruz between the other two, although braking required more distance than the others. Engine and wind noise are less than in the CX-9, although tire noise is much more noticeable.
In addition, the CX-9 accelerates quicker and stops in shorter distances than the...

This weekend at a summit in Paris, France's president, Nicolas Sarkozy, wants to heal the rift. Some 40 heads of state and government from the EU and the southern and eastern Mediterranean will meet to create a new club, called the Union for the Mediterranean.
The EU is not free of troubles either. Those who favour Turkey's membership of the EU fear that Club Med is designed to fob it off with second-class citizenship. At first Sarkozy schemed to include only the EU countries with a Mediterranean coast -- a ploy to create a French-dominated counterbalance to the apparently German-dominated east.
After a vicious row with Angela Merkel, Germany's chancellor, Sarkozy agreed to include the entire EU. That was right, if only because Germany pays much of the EU's bills.
