  • This paper investigates the way in which people categorize environmental sounds in their everyday lives. Previous research has shown that isolated environmental sounds are categorized on the basis of high-level semantic features when the sounds can be attributed to specific sound sources. However, in the presence of numerous sound sources, as occur in most real-world situations, the process of source identification is often hindered. In the present study, a free categorization task with open-ended verbal descriptions was used to investigate auditory categories for environmental sounds in complex real-world sonic environments. Two main categories emerged from the free-sort, reflecting the absence or presence of human activity in relation to hedonic judgments. At a subordinate level, subc...

  • Diet-related health problems have increased dramatically over the last few years. Consequently, nutritional labeling has emerged as an important aspect of consumers' food purchase decisions. Nutritional content in food products is considered to be a credence attribute. However, if trustworthy nutritional labels are available, nutritional labels could function as a search characteristic. The regulatory environment in some countries (e.g. USA, Australia etc.) has long recognized the potential of standardized on-pack nutrition information and has mandated the presence of nutritional labels on all processed food products. Others, like the EU, are contemplating similar mandatory nutritional labeling regulations. The nutritional labeling literature has grown significantly in recent years. Our...

  • To explore the internal dynamics of intercultural marriage, we conducted in-depth interviews with 18 married couples, of whom one partner was bom in Israel and the other immigrated from the former Soviet Union. The interviews focused on the contentious issues of everyday life: selfidentity, language use, cultural consumption, relations with the families/friends, division of household labor, and childrearing. The findings point to a clear tendency for immigrants to make most adjustments to the norms and expectations of the Israeli spouses and their social networks. For most immigrant spouses, the selective acculturation they had hoped for at the outset in fact morphed into relentless assimilation. The Israelization was expressed in the exclusive use of Hebrew in these homes; preference o...

  • Benjamin Tal, senior economist with CIBC World Markets in Toronto, categorizes Saskatchewan as the "hottest province." He says the projection for Newfoundland's growth "doesn't count" because it is measured against relatively light activity and narrowly based on output from the oil industry. Statistics Canada's latest figures put Saskatchewan's population at more than one million as of Oct. 1. It has the highest rate of population growth in the country and that marks a reversal in trends. The latest census, based on data taken in 2006, put Saskatchewan's population at 968,157, which was down 1.1 per cent from five years earlier. (The show) is a good example of both the old image and the new Saskatchewan," he says. "There's a million people a week who see that show, and it's a demonstr...
