  • The authors propose a general three-dimensional structure of ethnic identity for Italian- and Greek-Canadians with the following three dimensions: 1. Ethnic Language Use with Family Members, 2. Ethnic Language Media Exposure, and 3. Ethnic Attachment. They executed preliminary exploratory factor analyses (EFAs) and subsequent confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) separately for each ethnic group. Results suggest much similarity between the measurement models of each group. The CFAs also indicate that the two language-based dimensions are the most reliable indicators of ethnic identity for both ethnic groups. Estimates from additional second-order confirmatory factor analysis models, which also include acculturation, serve to demonstrate that the ethnic identity construct is discriminant o...

  • Ed Tyrchniewicz, a senior scholar in the agri-business department at the University of Manitoba, said while there has been a relative decline in Winnipeg's grain industry compared to the turn of the last century, local players aren't getting caught watching the soybeans grow. They're moving into value-added areas such as agri-food processing, agri-business manufacturing and biotechnology and life sciences. The future of Manitoba agriculture is more than just being a supplier of raw materials. That's what grain was. We exported it to somebody else to mill and make it into flour and bread. We're doing a lot more of the new activities here and looking at products that aren't for immediate food consumption, like pharmaceuticals, where agricultural products are used as a source for (medical...

  • In many cases, the fear didn't even make sense or even have any scientific backing. For instance, fear grew so quickly that various countries banned pork imports and numerous people all over the world refused to eat it. So, it doesn't take much to see that fear can not only ruin someone's travel plans, but it can literally affect global trade and food consumption. Recognizing that some employers, as a precaution, might also impose a quarantine on an employee, even if there are no symptoms, Manitoba Blue Cross could also consider these claims on an "extra-contractual" basis. However, since payment of claims affects an organization's claim experience, it is best for the employer to discuss these implications with their insurance carrier or adviser. Finally, Manitoba Blue Cross made a numb...

  • The U.S. economy is crumbling because the way we conduct the activities of daily life is insane relative to our circumstances. We've spent 60 years ramping up a suburban living arrangement that has suddenly entered a state of failure, and all its accessories and furnishings are failing in concert. The far-flung McHouse tracts are becoming both useless and worthless in the face of gasoline prices that will never be cheap again. The strip malls and office 'parks' are following the residential real estate off a cliff. The retail tenants of all those places are hemorrhaging customers who have maxed out every last credit card. The lack of business is now leading to substantial layoffs. The airline industry is dying and will probably cease to exist in its familiar form in 24 months. The truc...
