In no way, shape or form would I characterize this as some sort of revelation or breakthrough," Gregg Doud, chief economist of the U.S. National Cattlemen's Beef Association, told Reuters. "I would characterize it more as a good first step, an ability for the EU and the U.S. on agricultural trade issues to make progress.
The import duty on Roquefort cheese was slated to rise to 300 per cent from 100 per cent. The reason? Even at a 100 per cent markup, sales of the stinky cheese had only dropped 50 per cent. "One-hundred per cent duty was not deterring trade. These are trade sanctions. The idea is to deter that trade. We're trying to get parties to comply with the WTO ruling," lamented a U.S. government official in the Gourmet News food industry blog.

As a book author and columnist, I've closely watched the book market and newspaper industry for some time. While I've noticed the ripples and the rifts, when a so-called "volcano" blows and a major shift occurs, let's face it, it's still a shock.
Judging by the terminology used in a recent 2010 prediction, we are indeed going to see a substantial increase in general competitiveness in all aspects of our economy. Phrases such as corporate predators and words such as vulture, victim, takeover and weak targets have been frequently used to describe the new landscape. One of the challenges we can expect with this type of high-pressure, high-stakes environment is that businesses leaders in particular may engage in even more aggressive and unscrupulous behaviour as they attempt to topple a com...

Re: Not now (Dec. 30). Your editorial about the province holding the line on a minimum wage hike is right on the money. Increasing Manitoba's minimum wage -- again -- squeezes small business owners and entirely misses the point of reducing poverty. The province's 2,200 food-service establishments have also been struggling during the economic storm, and will feel this hit.
Last year's two minimum wage increases cost food-service operators an additional $15 million. If the wage is hiked again, owners will be forced to cut hours to control their costs and employees will end up earning less. This is especially true for those employees who earn far more in gratuity income than wage income. For them, losing hours translates not only into a loss of wage income, but more significantly, a loss o...

Ed Tyrchniewicz, a senior scholar in the agri-business department at the University of Manitoba, said while there has been a relative decline in Winnipeg's grain industry compared to the turn of the last century, local players aren't getting caught watching the soybeans grow. They're moving into value-added areas such as agri-food processing, agri-business manufacturing and biotechnology and life sciences.
The future of Manitoba agriculture is more than just being a supplier of raw materials. That's what grain was. We exported it to somebody else to mill and make it into flour and bread. We're doing a lot more of the new activities here and looking at products that aren't for immediate food consumption, like pharmaceuticals, where agricultural products are used as a source for (medical...

I've always been obsessed with food," says [Julie Van Rosendaal]. "My mom likes to tell this story about when I was three and I asked when I could cook by myself. And she said 'When you can read a recipe by yourself then you can cook by yourself.' I went off and came back and said, 'Mom what's a tebespuh?'
"Be mindful of when you are eating," she says. "When I'm cooking, I tend to nibble so I chew gum so that I don't. It's amazing how much you eat! You taste this, you taste that, you lick the spoon ... and yes, it's important to taste what you're cooking, but not when you're making cookies and you eat half the dough!
"It made me realize how much we depend on other people for our own successes," she says. "We credit Jenny Craig or we credit Weight Watchers or whatever -- and we never r...
