The ripple effect could be as simple as a zipper supplier who can't rely on CIT to advance payment for orders. That would then hurt trucking companies that would ship the zippers and overseas factories that need the zippers to make dresses. That could mean mounds of zipperless dresses at factories or piles of goods sitting on docks.
CIT is a key lender to the retail industry, but its most important role is serving as factor to about 2,000 vendors that supply merchandise to 300,000 stores, according to Craig Sherman, spokesman at the National Retail Federation. Analysts say 60 per cent of the apparel industry depends on CIT for financing, so other lenders taking up all the slack would pose a big financial strain.

I think they had hoped that I would take it over. They knew I had some interest," [Brian Scharfstein] says of his parents. "I often wonder, when they're looking down at us, whether they would really understand the way we run our company today. It's very different.
That much is obvious from his energy. At 54, Scharfstein's gait is still boyish as he bounds about the company's 25,000-square-foot headquarters. "[Pam] and I never thought we'd fill this space," he says, darting through the mazelike stock rooms filled with boxes. "Now, honestly, we could use 40,000 square feet."
One employee recently celebrated her 38th anniversary with the company. "We started as kids together at the original store. Of the original seven employees, three of them were from her family," Scharfstein says. "Sh...
