We had moved about 20 minutes outside of KC when the next incident happened. You have probably all seen pictures of the LAVs and the cannon on the front? Well, we have the ability to traverse the cannon in all directions. When we are driving, we usually alternate sides that we are pointed at, to maximize coverage. For example, my vehicle will take from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock. The vehicle behind will take from 12 o'clock to 9 o'clock, etc. Anyway, one of the LAVs passed too close to a truck, hitting the truck. Fortunately, the truck was static, and no-one was in the front of it. The turret was knocked right around, hitting the two soldiers standing in the back. Both were seriously injured and were sent back to Canada for reconstructive surgery -- but both will be okay. The highpoint of ...

Because of the current desire to make our homes as energy-efficient as possible, especially with newly built homes, we have created a dilemma with moisture control in the homes. With new houses, these problems are unique due to the nature of the building materials used to construct the dwelling. Most of the components of our wood-frame homes have fairly high moisture contents when installed. This includes not only the wood framing & sheathing materials, but also the concrete in the foundation and basement floor slab as well as the drywall, taping compounds and paint used to finish the inside of the home. Some of this moisture is easily released into the air in the home as materials like paint and drywall compounds dry, but other sources may be more slowly released as the material ag...

Whether your holiday plans include hosting a party in which you do all of the food preparation or a casual "potluck" style affair, good food safety practices can go a long way toward making the event a memorable one for all the right reasons. In the home, food safety concerns revolve around three main functions: food storage, food handling, and cooking. According to Robert Buchanan, Ph.D., senior science adviser and director of science in the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), many people overlook the importance of maintaining an appropriate refrigerator temperature. According to John Guzewich, CFSAN's director of emergency coordination and response, the kitchen sink drain, disposal, and connecting pipe are often overlooked, but they ...

This paper argues that states have undergone a shift in how they see and respond to human smuggling. They are now less bound by those land borders that once demarcated the edges of sovereign territory and act more transnationally in response to the transnational practices of human smugglers. The interception of four cargo boats carrying migrants smuggled from Fujian, China, serves as a case study. Central to understanding the struggle between smugglers and States are geography and vision: how each sees the landscape, plays on distance and proximity, and puts geography to work. After explaining the methodology, I locate Canada in the global industries of human smuggling and border enforcement, outline changes to border enforcement that have taken place in the time since these interceptio...

A properly installed sump pump will be connected to a length of ABS plastic drain piping that exits the foundation wall above grade and empties outside the house. This pipe may be of considerable length and should have a fitting at the exterior to easily connect a flexible extension hose, to direct the sump water well away from the foundation. This hose must be removed in the fall before the ambient temperature falls below freezing for extended periods of time. If this regular maintenance is not completed, and the hose is still connected to the sump drain pipe, the hose may freeze and the pump will not be able to pump effectively. A frozen line may cause a pump to engage for long periods of time, without draining water from the pit, as designed. In some cases, the pump may actually over...
