Take locally grown peppers," she says. "The thicker-skinned peppers have the best flavour as opposed to the imported.
"I had made some sauce, but I froze the rest and then I let them thaw and pureed them," she recounts. "It tasted like a summer sauce as opposed to the canning process."
"I take one head of full garlic at a time, roast them and throw them in a Ziploc bag and freeze and take out what I need," she says. "I pop it into the microwave to soften it and squeeze it out."

For the challenge, Neufeld and Andres fed themselves with lettuce, spinach and herbs from their own greenhouse and garden, and substituted sugar with maple syrup and honey. Local farms helped with a supply of beans, eggs and a full range of meats such as chicken, beef, bison, turkey and pork sausage.

This next method is the quickest way I know of to cook the kind of zucchini that looks like it grew next to a nuclear reactor. Slice it into rings about 1/2-inch thick and dip them into a Teriyaki marinade (use Jean Pare's Fast Teriyaki: mix 125 ml (1/2 cup) soya sauce; 60 ml (1/4 cup) cooking oil; 15 ml (1 tbsp) ketchup; 1 ml (1/4 tsp) garlic powder). Coat each piece lightly and then slip them all into a zipper-type bag. Pour any remaining marinade into the bag and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Grill both sides. Time will depend on how hot your grill is -- cook until tender. We served this a couple of weeks ago on hamburgers and it was fantastic. It's also great as a side.

Not having a big garden to clean up means my to-do list is mercifully short. In the next few weeks, the tropical plants will have to come indoors. Each one will be inspected and treated for insect pests and given a good bath to wash off the dust that settled on the foliage. The furniture will stay -- there's no where else to put it, anyway -- but I'll stash the cushions in a closet until next year.
What your friend has is commonly called a Madagascar palm, though it isn't a palm but a succulent related to the plumeria. Pachypodium lamerei is a popular houseplant grown for its thick, silvery trunk covered with thorns and its palm-like mop-top of shiny green leaves. Like most succulents, Pachypodium lamerei are easy to grow, requiring very little water or special care. However, they do re...

Today's consumers, even many farm families, no longer produce much food. It's easier to get lettuce at the store than to grow it in your garden. It's less work to buy a can of beans than to pick and freeze your own.
There are things all of us can do. Living in town, I can't raise a cow. But I can find a farmer from whom to buy a quarter of beef, or I can locate a butcher who sells local meat. Those without garden space might try container gardening, if they have a deck, or in summer they can buy produce at a farmers' market -- in quantity if there's time to deal with it.
Studies have shown that the average distance travelled by food items for the American table is 2,400 kilometres. In Canada, it's probably farther. If we choose to buy at least some of our food locally, surely we can red...

(Fruit growers) irrigate in order to keep the frost off. When you put water on crops, the water protects the plant. When you see an icicle hanging off an orange, it doesn't mean it's destroyed," said Scott Schriemer, owner of Vic's Fruit Market.
"I think that everybody should just relax and hold off until we get all the facts. I don't even have all the facts and I'm in the industry. Until you speak to people who are on the ground there and they say 'this is the damage,' all we're doing is speculating.
"Oranges can be kept really cold. Just because there's frost on them doesn't mean they've gone bad. They'd have to freeze solid for them to go bad," said Munther Zeid, owner of four FoodFare stores in Winnipeg.
