EVEN the most dedicated movie buffs probably won't find their mailboxes jammed with invites to hip Hollywood parties. So the trick to hosting your own buzz-worthy Academy Awards party is to make your home and guests feel as glam as the real thing. A little planning and a few simple recipes and party tips from Oscar party veterans are all that's required.
Don't forget the drinks. Champagne or other sparkling wine is an obvious choice. Giada De Laurentiis, host of the Food Network's Everyday Italian, suggests setting up a Bellini Bar. While a traditional Bellini is made from peaches and sparkling wine, De Laurentiis suggests a choice of fruit syrups.

ST. Patrick's Day is coming, boy-o. For some of you, this means donning the traditional colours and adding a little food colouring to your beer. For dietitians across Canada, the month of March is not so much about "the wearin' of the green" as it is about "the eatin' of the greens.
These recipes are quick and easy and healthy," says the foundation's Lora Montebruno-Myco. "They had to be low in fat and salt and we wanted to use locally available foods."
Dietitians of Canada have produced Simply Great Food: 250 Quick, Easy & Delicious Recipes. You'll find recipes for all three meals and healthy snacks in this brightly illustrated cookbook. There's plenty of nutritional advice at the beginning that will help you implement Canada's Food Guide. All the recipes include nutrient breakdo...

With the abundance of red tomatoes this fall, there have been several requests that came in this last week for tomato recipes and also for tomato soup recipes that include basil. My own garden supply of red tomatoes that I have been storing has almost come to an end (as well as my basil), and in trying to use up the tomatoes I adapted a couple of recipes I had clipped years ago for today's soup recipe. It makes use of local harvest items and is nutrition packed as well as a nice flavour blend.
Place chopped tomatoes in saucepan and heat slowly to simmering, stirring to prevent sticking and burning. Simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add lemon rind, allspice, cinnamon and cloves. Stir in lemon juice. Measure sugar and set aside. Stir pectin into tomatoes. Bring to a boil over high...

It's pretty cool," says [Rosemary Szabadka], " It's basically a virtual recipe box that you can develop for yourself at home. You can take your favourite recipes and you put them online.
"For a two- to three-year-old, we'd be looking at four fruit and vegetable servings.," she says "But if you're between 19 and 50 years and you're a male, you'd be looking at eight to 10."
"What you do is challenge yourself on one or more of those top 10," says Rosemary Szabadka, "Let's say you want to eat more fruits and vegetables, so you would challenge yourself to look at some specific behaviours that would help you to eat more fruits and vegetables. Then you would set specific goals like 'I'm going to have a piece of fruit with my breakfast every morning.' So it's taking specific action."

Lazy Days and Beach Blankets has a good assortment of elegant recipes that can be part of the portable feast, but it also offers lovely photos to feed the imagination. You could be sipping that iced tea while stretched out in the blue hammock or lounging on red cushions under a tree. Or maybe that's your red-striped picnic blanket spread out on the grass near the lakeshore. You could use pretty tea towels as place mats or serve grilled sandwiches on bread boards. And if you're staying home, there's always the traditional bleached white linens on a table under the stars.
To wrap things up, I'm going to give you what has become my new favourite summer drink, iced green tea. I don't like the taste of green tea when it is served hot, but I will drink this entire jug of iced green tea in a d...

I had been writing a weekly feature for the Free Press and I went to this fabulous Cuisine Canada conference," says [Ilana Simon], "I met a cookbook publisher from Toronto from [Robert Rose] and started discussing the possibilities of a cookbook and we came up with this idea. My first cookbook was The 125 Best Fondue Recipes and it's now sold 100,000 copies world-wide.
"I think fondue has come back into vogue for a number of reasons. People like to stay at home to entertain. It's also a really fun, sociable way to entertain, because instead of the host or hostess stuck in a kitchen, you're out there with your guests, all together. It's leisurely and it's slow and you're really enjoying each other's company."
