  • Check for diesel fuel in the engine oil, as many of the connections are located under the valve covers. It can take a few hours to complete this diagnosis, so I'd recommend leaving it to a specialist. If you do check connections, don't place your hands along the fuel lines. Fuel pressures are high enough to inject fuel through your skin into the bloodstream. Instead, move paper strips along the lines and look for fuel stains on the paper. QUESTION: Our 2003 PT Cruiser GT Turbo 'Service Engine' light keeps coming on. The car was scanned by a tech and found a code No. 304, which is a misfire on the No. 4 cylinder. He replaced the sparkplug wires and sparkplugs, cleared the code and the next day we had our 'service engine' light back on again. After talking to others, I changed the ignitio...

  • QUESTION: My car is a 1991 Oldsmobile Toronado with a 3.8L engine with only 77,676 kilometres. In the last year, unburned fuel has been accumulating in the oil pan. When the oil level is checked, the level is higher, looks more watery, along with the smell of raw unburned fuel on the dipstick. A good working BCM and ECM were swapped from another identical car and the O2 sensor and fuel regulator have also been replaced. All with no remedy. An injector with a faulty spray pattern can be tested by watching fuel pressure changes as each injector is triggered individually with a scan tool. The pressure drop should be equal for all injectors. I don't think this will help in this situation though. Instead, I think you may have an injector that leaks fuel after the engine is shut off, so no co...

  • Malaysia held the ninth Sarawak state election on May 20, 2006. It has invited various issues such as native customary rights land development, fuel hike and Chief Minister successor issue. Barisan Nasional won 62 of the 71 seats. The result was seen as a shock because BN failed to maintain the big mandate given from the previous election which was 60 of the 62 seats contested. The opposition meanwhile won 9 seats, reflecting new voting attitudes among the voters. This article examines the election issues and their performance in the election. This article also discusses the factors that influenced the voting patterns and the implications in the future. It is drawn from a 14 days fieldwork since nomination day, throughout election campaign period and polling day in May 2006.

  • A litre of fuel will set you back just a nickel in oil-rich Venezuela, the lowest price in the world, according to current.com, a leading peer-to-peer news and information website.

  • The United States navy, for its part, is placing its faith in biofuels. It has tested a biofuel made from the camelina plant in its F-18 Hornet jet. Next it will test biofuels in ship turbines. It is also installing stern flaps on its amphibious vehicles that can reduce fuel use by two to three per cent, and developing better coatings to prevent the growth of algae and barnacles on hulls that cause drag and increase fuel consumption. In October, the USS Makin Island, an amphibious assault ship, was the first of 12 hybrid-powered ships to take to the water. It saved nearly $2 million in fuel costs on its maiden voyage alone. At slow speeds, it runs only on an electric motor powered by the ship's auxiliary turbine. At higher speeds, the main turbine takes over. This is a step on the way t...

  • Cold-engine start-up performance is crucial to long engine life and good fuel economy. It takes a very rich air/fuel mixture to ignite in cold engine cylinders. Much of this fuel is wasted and dilutes the oil film on the cylinder walls, causing more engine wear. As the engine warms up, additional fuel is needed to keep the engine idling smoothly. Only when the engine is fully warmed up will optimum fuel economy be achieved. This is why good thermostat operation is important for fuel economy. If the thermostat opens too soon, it takes longer for the engine to warm up and more fuel is wasted. Exhaust heat recirculation reduces heat waste by warming engine coolant during cold start-up. It also heats up the passenger cabin quickly. The diesel Otto cycle is more efficient than current gasoli...

  • Good fuel economy is achieved by attention to details, good engine design and having the right combination of drivetrain for the vehicle. Let's look at a few things manufacturers are doing currently to increase their fuel economy ratings. The new Hyundai Santa Fe is a good example of what technology can do. The new 2010 model gets a larger 3.5-litre V6 engine, up from 3.3 litres, and it puts out 274 horsepower, up from 242 in last year's model. With those numbers, you would expect the engine to use more fuel but it doesn't. Instead, it gets 14-per-cent better fuel economy. Reducing engine internal friction has been an ongoing goal. Low-tension piston rings, shorter piston skirts, roller lifters and roller timing chains are all parts used to reduce parasitic drag. Another way of reducing...

  • The U.K. Advertising Standards Authority ruled Wednesday in favour of a complaint by the WWF's British arm that a newspaper ad in which Dutch-based Shell described its Alberta oilsands operations as "sustainable" was "misleading" and violated ad industry codes for "truthfulness," "substantiation" and "environmental claims. Oilsands are one of the world's dirtiest sources of fuel and have a major impact on the environment," David Norman, director of campaigns at WWF-UK, said following the ruling. "Their extraction cannot be described as a sustainable process and for Shell to claim otherwise is wholly misleading." The 20-second ad, which alternates pictures of Shell's Canadian oilsands projects with critical comments from WWF, states: "Shell say they care about climate change. But they'...

  • Several oil industry officials said although there are two other refineries in Canada that re-refine used motor oil, they convert it into a new oil product, not diesel fuel. The executive director of the industry-sponsored organization that runs the province's oil recovery program -- Manitoba Association for Resource Recovery Corp. (MARRC) -- said the HD-Petroleum refinery will be a welcome development for the province. This is solid. This is a good thing," Ron Benson said. "Any time we can have another approved, licensed place to send our used oil, it's a good thing. And it's in Manitoba, so that's more good news. Aside from the new jobs that are created, "just getting that (used motor oil) out of the area and turning it into usable diesel fuel is a plus," [Reeve Roger Vermette] said...

  • [Jim Rondeau] said forcing oil companies to sell the renewable fuel is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the province by 56,000 tonnes a year. That's the equivalent of taking 11,000 cars off the road. In the 2007 provincial election campaign, the NDP promised to implement a five per cent biodiesel mandate by 2010. But Rondeau said Wednesday the province decided to take a gradual approach to ensure a more seamless transition for the industry. Rondeau also said Wednesday the province will help jump-start the industry by offering biodiesel producers a 14-cent-a-litre subsidy. The subsidy, which is to end in five years, will replace the government's current fuel tax exemption on biodiesel.
