Once again, we must initially focus on suitable feedstocks that are currently considered waste materials, such as slaughterhouse waste, recycled oils, low-grade oil seeds (green canola or soybean), and ruminant deadstock. Based on estimates by the Manitoba Biodiesel Advisory Council, such waste materials in Manitoba could be converted to up to 95 million litres of biodiesel annually (about 11 per cent of Manitoba consumption of diesel fuel). Research studies are ongoing at the University of Manitoba to characterize some of these available but widely distributed waste materials for use in biodiesel production. I can't recall ever seeing a distance-to-empty readout spew out four digits, but when the instruments lit up on this tester, the digital display was reporting I could drive 1,036 kilometres before I'd need to refill its 80-litre tank. I assumed the computer's calculations were optimistic, but, even after driving a few kilometres, it was still confident this big sedan could run the distance on one tank. While the conventional gas-fuelled V8 E-Class sedan is rated at 13L/100 km when driving around town and 9.0 L/100 km on the highway, the same sedan with the Bluetec diesel can stretch the highway mileage to 5.9 L/100 km and 9.0 L/100 km in town. Other than a rear seat area that's a little tight, the Legacy's interior is easy to like. That's especially true for the driver's environment, which is home to a dash design heavily influenced by the E46 generation (1999-2005) of BMW 3-Series cars. The centre stack is angled slightly toward the driver to keep controls within easy reach, but still easily accessible to the front passenger. The Legacy has a decent six-speaker, six-CD audio system that's pre-wired for XM satellite radio. Getting it to work requires a $500 dealer-installed accessory kit, but it's a slick system that is easy to navigate through.
