So for all the bluster and all the hollering, there was not a word from the platform dealing with the needed reform. Only a voice from the audience bellowing "electoral reform" brought discussion to the cause of Canada's broken democracy. Sure, the speaker acknowledged the need for electoral reform, but one has to wonder if the coalition really understands, really wants Canadians to have true parliamentary representation or are they just playing the game until they get their chance to be the "majority" (of seats, not votes) government.
There is always a positive side to a crisis: an opportunity. These days, we have the chance to learn about our parliamentary democratic system of government. Judging by the reactions of many Canadians and MPs, including the prime minister, it is evident t...

Jeff Neufeld's fifth-inning RBI triple jump-started the Brandon Cloverleafs to a 3-1 win over the Neepawa Farmers in Manitoba Senior Baseball League action at Andrews Field on Sunday. Neepawa (8-12-0), which faces the Dodgers in the best-of-three first-round playoff series beginning on Friday in Oak River, had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning.

I don't want to be one of those guys that has one big year and then falls off. There are expectations for myself and the Moose this year," told Jaffray. "I'm not a guy that when he gets sent down is going to mope. Going into camp, you're hoping to make the big team, but ultimately I saw myself starting down here and trying to work my way up during the year.
"In the AHL you're used to getting three or four shots a game where in the NHL you're maybe only going to get one a game," explained Jaffray. "Just one glorious chance a game if you're lucky. It's a matter of capitalizing on your chances. In our last pre-season game against Calgary I had a couple of point-blank chances on Mikka Kiprusoff. You never know if I put those two in, I might still be there. I'm kind of kicking myself now b...

He even took a couple well-aimed shots at Glenn Howard, today's opponent in the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials semifinal, after the Ontario skip's suggestion he was mentally exhausted prior to his loss to Stoughton in the '09 Brier semifinal.
Oh, what an excuse, eh?" Stoughton grinned. "It's the frickin' Brier semifinal... how could you possibly be mentally exhausted? They didn't come out as sharp as they were and made a couple of dumb calls in the second end and we took full advantage of it (scoring four) and it was still a last-rock game.
"No one's giving us much of a chance and because everyone wants the Howard-Martin final, all the pressure's on them to perform at their best. We're coming in here as underdogs for sure and we'll milk that till the cows come home. We have to put th...

It's always nice to score in the playoffs. Everyone has to chip in and our line did in this game," said [Mike Keane], before reflecting on the chance to play in front of his family and friends during the later chapters of his career. "It's been awesome. Not just for moments like this. But for lots of reasons. Not every player gets a chance to do this, to play in their hometown. I've loved it and hopefully we can fulfill our dream and win a championship.
"Mike is just Mike and he does his job the same every night. He scored a big goal for us and made a good play going to the net," said [Scott Arniel]. "Whether he's blocking shots or playing defensively and grinding it out, or doing his best to chip in offensively. He wears the captain's C for a reason and he showed why again in this ga...

THERE were plenty of blank stares and long faces as the Blue Bombers trundled through two airports yesterday on their way home from Montreal after Thursday's 30-15 pre-season loss to the Alouettes.
RB Onterrio Smith: Never had much of a chance to make an impression, missing one game and carrying just twice in the other. But the work of Henri Childs leaves Smith's future here in doubt.
DE Stevie Baggs: Picked up the Bombers' lone sack against Montreal the other night, but you get the impression the coaches were expecting more.

That got the big Griff turned around and out of [Lee Goren]'s mug and into [BRAD Moran]'s, who got the customary face-rub from the much bigger winger. [Darryl Bootland] and Goren both were penalized and Bootland came back later in the period to beat Drew MacIntyre to make it 3-0 in a terrible opening 20 minutes for the home side.
On a night when Manitoba's top line of Moran, Goren and leading scorer Jason Jaffray didn't show the same zest or flare they usually do -- as with the rest of the club -- Moran came back later in the first period to beat Jimmy Howard on the power play to give the Moose a smidgen of a chance in a game they really didn't deserve to be in.

Troy did a good job," [Brendan Taman] said. "We'll be talking to the coaches and sitting down at the end of the year to evaluate everybody, but the way he played in the last few games, he did a great job for us. I don't know if he deserves to be cut after what he's just done for us.
* IN DEFENCE OF DINWIDDIE -- "Ryan Dinwiddie played his heart out. I really commend him for doing the very best that he could in a really tough situation," [Westwood] said of the Bombers' novice pro quarterback, who threw three interceptions and fumbled once in his first CFL start. "Our offence overcame a lot of things. Basically, we had a chance there to win the game. We just couldn't quite pull it off."
Added LB Ike Charlton: "You remember Baltimore when they won the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer, when t...
