The Canadian government has set up a system to further the development of genetically engineered crops and plants. (Government and industry prefer to call these products "genetically modified organisms" or GMOs.) In this country, those crops are brought forward for open-air trials as "novel foods," foods that may be a little different than the conventional stuff of our diets, but are essentially the same. Canadian regulators focus on the end-product, not how it is produced. In fact, these genetically engineered crops are plants where one or two genes have been imported into the plant's genome in the laboratory. This transgenic manipulation could not happen in nature through conventional crossbreeding; it could only be done by scientists using DNA technology.
