It is surely not to audacious to infer that Germans leave the parental home while still in education more than Italians because they have additional means to do so. Not only their parents, as in Italy, might support them, in addition students' subsidizes and training wages represent an additional (if not even the main) source of income. This relative economic independence from parents might facilitate the achievement of residential independence, or at least it increases their "bargain power" vis-a-vis their parents. Moreover, also the employment conditions of young people in Italy and West-Germany are quite different. The youth unemployment rate is always higher in Italy than in West-Germany. Yet, while in the mid '80s the Italian rate was Only' twice as much as the West-German's, in th...

A bus tour through the capital gives one a sense of awe towards the history and life-changing events that took place here. The contrast of classical historic buildings and advanced modern architecture gives the city its vibrant character and wonderful charm. We passed through Karl Marx Allee with its stately Russian architecture and prefab buildings of the 50s and 60s, admired the magnificent restored churches and cathedrals, and toured through Barn Quarter, a historic district whose web of crooked lanes has morphed into a trendy entertainment, art, a high end shopping zone. Charlottenburg Schloss (schloss means palace) is the largest palace in Berlin, built as a summer residence for Sophie Charlotte, the wife of Elector Friedrich III in 1695-1699. The palace took a few knocks during th...

The paper attempts to integrate two major theoretical approaches for the explanation of kinship relationships, namely the institutional approach of cultural anthropology and the interactionist approach of family sociology and social gerontology. It takes the institutional settings of kinship systems on the societal level into account and relates them to interactions within the kinship groups. These relations are formulated in two hypotheses: The lineagehypothesis refers to the selection of kinship members for interaction relationships; the welfarehypothesis refers to the selection with regard to the kind of relationship (functional solidarity and/ or emotional solidarity). The empirical analysis is based on an approach suggested by Silverstein et al. (1994) for intergenerational relatio...

It's a difficult topic here in Germany,'' says young guide Tom Schmechtig, whose grandmother's brother was a member of Hitler's Secret Service. "When you are a young German you are always confronted by the war.''
One of the key attractions of the city, even if you won't see it listed on any "Best Of'' lists, is the "green lung'' of Stuttgart. A 200-square-kilometre park is located in the centre of the city, part of a plan to provide forests, biking paths and a place to relax in the densely populated city.
Favourite quote in all of Germany? "Beer isn't considered alcoholic. It's considered nourishment.'' - [Heidelberg] tour guide Susanne Miltner.

Do the different ideological legacies of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) result in persisting differences in women's housework in the unified Germany? In this paper, I examine the housework of employed German women, singles and as well as women with partners, in the decade after unification using data from the German Socioeconomic Panel (GSOEP). This comparison allows me to assess the role of regional differences in shaping women's housework, while further distinguishing between full-time and part-time workers. The study shows that women with partners do more housework than single women do, regardless of region of residence. Among singles, there are no East- West differences in either the level of housework or the mechanisms that sha...

Dresden, in Germany's east, boasts the Striezelmarkt, the oldest documented Christmas market in the country, dating to 1434. It is the home of the largest "Christmas pyramid" -- a 45-foot-high wood structure lit with candles that spin the tiers of the decorated pyramid.
The tradition for Christmas wood carving comes from the Erzgebirge, or "Ore mountains," an old mining region south of the city that borders the Czech Republic. Nutcrackers and "smoking men" incense holders were originally created here.
They come for the Lebkuchen, a spicy gingerbread baked here since 1395 and "3 in a Weggla," which are tiny Nuremberg wursts, served three little sausages abreast in a bun with spicy mustard. The Christkind, an angelic or fairy-like character, is the symbol of the market, and a woman with g...
