So why should you care? After all, if Canada were brimming with news U.S. readers would demand to know what was happening there, and metro papers here would oblige. But by conventional U.S. standards of newsworthiness, Canada is a nullity. If it's true, as Churchill remarked of the Balkans, that some places produce more history than they consume, Canada would be the opposite, a black hole that imports trends, culture, politics, histories from elsewhere -- from Scotland, England, France, the United States and, lately, the West Indies and South Asia -- and emits no perceptible light.
Here's an example. Some years ago -- the late '80s, early '90s -- the U.S. media became smitten with Japan. The genius of Japanese industry, the gold-plated work ethic of Japanese workers, the sky-high saving...

Female Olympic athletes had a 10-year reprieve from not having to prove they actually are women, but it appears for the Vancouver Games. The 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney were the first Olympics since 1968 that women athletes did not have to be "tested" through a buccal smear to make sure they were female. These tests, which used a swab of saliva from the athletes, can have a 20 per cent false-positive rate, something the IOC chose to ignore. Instead they sent women packing, telling them to feign an injury or be exposed as not really being female. Needless to say these quasi-scientific "proofs" of sexuality devastated women who knew they were women, no matter what the faulty test read. Finally in 2000, the IOC's athlete's commission persuaded them to get rid ...

Toronto's S&P/TSX composite index closed up 112.35 points to 13,850.95, while the TSX Venture Exchange slipped 0.29 points to 2,547.37 points.
It's more confidence coming into the market, but also a narrowing of the market where certain sections are leading, in particular the agriculture and the commodities, while others are lagging, mainly the financials," said Ian Nakamoto, director of research at MacDougall, MacDougall and MacTier.
The mining sector led the increases on the TSX, up 2.3 per cent after Barrick Gold (TSX:ABX) and NovaGold (TSX:NG) said they were studying the viability of doubling the mining rate at their Donlin Creek project in Alaska.
