Nevertheless, by the time they got to [Schubert]'s Ständchen (Serenade), D. 920 and Schumann's Zigeunerleben (Gypsy Life), Op. 29/3, they appeared more at ease, performing the German Lieder with purity and natural conviction. Having the Vienna Boys Choir sing music by Viennese waltz king Johann Strauss Jr. is a no-brainer. The sentimental Wiener Blut (Viennese Spirits) Waltz, Op. 354 still tugs at the heartstrings, stirring the soul in ways that are probably lost on these performers. Naturally, there were crowd-pleasing carols, including The First Noël, Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, and a hauntingly simple Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming. A robust arrangement of Adeste fideles was sung with gusto, showing that the choir could belt it out with the best of them.
