  • It appears the Winnipeg Transit people have not really given particularly deep consideration to the trackless trolley concept as outlined by Coun. Russ Wyatt. Wyatt is right on when addressing potential savings in energy costs as well as greenhouse gases by switching to electrically propelled trackless trolleys (aka trolley buses.) To say converting Winnipeg's major bus routes to electric propulsion will potentially increase greenhouse gas releases in the U.S. is about as disingenuous as one can get. Will Hydro really sell less electricity down south if Winnipeg switches to hydro-powered electric vehicles? It seems a stretch. Kudos to Russ Wyatt for speaking out for the people of Winnipeg who don't drive expensive gas-guzzling SUVs. After being in Toronto in August, I realize just how l...

  • Ferland met [Auguste Vermette] when the Métis man was 90 years old. Recognizing him as an "unbelievable prize" -- a living storehouse of Manitoba history -- Ferland interviewed him eight to 10 times per year for more than five years, until Vermette died at the age of 95 in 1986. [Louis Riel] was "short and chubby," according to Vermette, though Riel was executed in 1885 -- before Vermette was born. But Vermette was able to transmit all the memories of his father, one of the Métis who took up arms with Riel in the so-called rebellion of 1869-70 that led to Manitoba joining Confederation. It's sinful!" declares Ferland. "Mr. Vermette called it a monstrosity! He would choke on the word every time he said it. He was so terribly offended... Riel was the head of state.

  • A propos Lorie Battershill's letter: The first thing I turn to Sunday is the Free Press Books section. I look to see if there's a new Rankin, Robinson, Updike or Theroux. I enjoy reading reviews of my favourites' "latest," and being steered to "new" writers. Thanks for providing a platform. Thanks, too, for sponsoring the annual writing contests and printing the winners. It's a boost much appreciated by the writing community. If your editorial writer understood how Canada is governed, he or she would have less reason to envy the American presidential system. If it is true that Americans regard their president "with a kind of reverence and respect normally reserved for monarchs and emperors," that is hardly something to be envied. The Queen does not "rule" over a vast commonwealth. She p...

  • [Vaclav Havel] was a popular dissident in 1989 when virtually overnight a non-violent regime change took place in Communist Czechoslovakia -- the so-called "Velvet Revolution" -- and he was propelled from rebel artist to president. Czechoslovakia was the first country in the entire Soviet bloc where a genuine and lifelong non-communist, who moreover had only a few days before been a leading dissident, a 'star in the theater of opposition,' became the head of state. The castle of the title is Prague Castle, historical seat of the Czech nation -- "literally a city within a city, consisting of hundreds of buildings and many acres of gardens" -- inhabited in the past by Czech kings, princes and the Hapsburg rulers of the former Austro-Hungarian empire.

  • There are good reasons, however, to believe that the new administration will perform well. President [Obama] has assembled an excellent team of advisers, diplomats, economists and thinkers to navigate the treacherous shoals. And thanks in part to outgoing president George W. Bush, the administration has taken control of the reins of power effortlessly in one of the smoothest transitions in history. The president's selections for key personnel, such as Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, show he is not intimidated or threatened by strong personalities, or even potential adversaries. His team, in fact, is reminiscent of the one assembled by former president John F. Kennedy, the first president to aggressively recruit the best and brightest talent in the land. Canada's sovereign actuall...

  • People are displaced, they've lost their homes but they haven't lost their jobs," said Alex Wynter of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. "The key issue is land. French President Nicolas Sarkozy, making the first visit ever by a French head of state to his nation's former colony, pledged 16,000 tarps and 1,000 tents to house 200,000 people while touring the ruins of Port-au-Prince's national palace. "If they chase after us, we'll leave. Until then we're here," said Lens Beny, a 20-year-old water peddler who built a shack for himself and five relatives. His door is a lace curtain; the roof is a garbage bag.

  • Malaysia held the ninth Sarawak state election on May 20, 2006. It has invited various issues such as native customary rights land development, fuel hike and Chief Minister successor issue. Barisan Nasional won 62 of the 71 seats. The result was seen as a shock because BN failed to maintain the big mandate given from the previous election which was 60 of the 62 seats contested. The opposition meanwhile won 9 seats, reflecting new voting attitudes among the voters. This article examines the election issues and their performance in the election. This article also discusses the factors that influenced the voting patterns and the implications in the future. It is drawn from a 14 days fieldwork since nomination day, throughout election campaign period and polling day in May 2006.

  • I'm a First Nations person and I'm rediscovering my past and my identity as a First Nations person," said [Cadmus Delorme], who is Cree. "(Attending FNUC) allows me to strengthen that part of me." Delorme added the Bemidji State coach is still trying to convince him to head to the U.S. school. And he just might take him up on the offer in the new year. "We only golf six months of the year," he said. "The other six months it's like minus 40." Delorme was introduced to golf at about the age of eight as there is an 18-hole championship course - the Last Oak Golf and Country Club - on the Cowessess First Nation. "They taught me how much you can fall in love with a sport you can never conquer," he said. "I will golf for as long as I can. With the sport you strive for perfection but in reali...

  • Methinks the Governor General has gone bonkers. At the very least, she is exhibiting delusions of grandeur. While in Paris this month, Michalle Jean grandly referred to herself as Canada's "head of state." Twice. I worry with good reason. Last summer, Jeffrey Simpson, political columnist with the Globe and Mail, unfavourably compared Prince Charles to the Governor General. Simpson described the GG as "contemporary, bilingual, multicultural, modern and worldly." He carelessly dismissed [Charles] as "stodgy," and predicted that his Canadian visit here in November would drive up the number of people who want us to ditch the monarchy. Charles has endured years of hostility from the popular press. He has been portrayed as an eccentric, dotty recluse who talks to plants and goes into unintell...
