It appears the Winnipeg Transit people have not really given particularly deep consideration to the trackless trolley concept as outlined by Coun. Russ Wyatt. Wyatt is right on when addressing potential savings in energy costs as well as greenhouse gases by switching to electrically propelled trackless trolleys (aka trolley buses.) To say converting Winnipeg's major bus routes to electric propulsion will potentially increase greenhouse gas releases in the U.S. is about as disingenuous as one can get. Methinks the Governor General has gone bonkers. At the very least, she is exhibiting delusions of grandeur. While in Paris this month, Michalle Jean grandly referred to herself as Canada's "head of state." Twice. I worry with good reason. Last summer, Jeffrey Simpson, political columnist with the Globe and Mail, unfavourably compared Prince Charles to the Governor General. Simpson described the GG as "contemporary, bilingual, multicultural, modern and worldly." He carelessly dismissed [Charles] as "stodgy," and predicted that his Canadian visit here in November would drive up the number of people who want us to ditch the monarchy. Quebec's debate on the reasonable accommodation of religious and ethnic minorities is a healthy exercise that should take place in the rest of Canada as well, says Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean. Speaking with CanWest News Service to mark this week's second anniversary of her swearing in as Canada's head of state, Jean said Quebec is no different than other parts of Canada when it comes to attitudes toward minorities.
