A two-year-old girl watched from her crib as her mother and her mother's boyfriend were beaten with baseball bats during a violent home invasion, RCMP say. Five people are charged for the first home invasion - Ashley Brandon, 25, Clinton Bird, 20, Lance Tanner, 25, Diane Brandon, 30, and a 16-year-old female are each charged with break and enter, robbery with a firearm, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon and mischief.

The parole board refused to grant Buckels day or full parole late last year based on a number of factors, not least of which were a reluctance to recant his ties to a notorious Winnipeg street gang and a belief that the risk he poses to the community "is not manageable. Buckels told a review board his drug infractions were committed for "purely financial" reasons and that he's steered clear of using them since being locked up. He had been granted day parole in 2001 for a past conviction but went unlawfully at large and had his parole revoked. His last crack at statutory release was also revoked and Buckels was forced to serve out his full sentence.
