  • Behind the joint ownership of financial resources is the couple's adherence to the values of family collectivism and relational harmony, and this is so even when the spouses may have kept some "other incomes" in their own pockets. "Whatever the choice [spending] we make, we do it for the best interest of the family" and "We are the family!" are among the common responses from the collectivized couples. A middle-aged businessman said of his wife with gratitude: "My wife is very family orientated. A few years ago, she received a scholarship for graduate studies from a university in the U.S. Worried that I would not be able to take care of myself and our , daughter, she gave up the opportunity.... She has sacrificed so much for our family." His wife (a government official), in a separate i...

Even in her darkest moment she remained true to who and what she was. "That's right," the general tells him. "I told the cooks to bring out three sets of empty plates." For further validation at the end of the film [Olive] gets an autograph from Miss California. "Do you eat ice cream?" Olive asks her. "Of course," she smiles. "My favorite flavour is Chocolate Cherry Jerry Garcia."

  • This paper presents the results of a research project developed to analyze and diagnose family co-responsibility in Spain. The basic goal of the research was to broaden our knowledge about how families negotiate the division of household labour and also to understand how the processes involved in such negotiation hinder or facilitate changes in gender roles. In this paper, we report our analysis and conclusions in relation to the implicit model implemented by parents in the socialization of shared family responsibility. The data used for the analysis were taken from a set of semistructured interviews carried out in a focus group context with Spanish parents. The analysis shows how the traditional, idealized model of co-responsibility has been substituted by a more individualistic one. H...

  • This study compares two countries: Italy and Britain. It examines data from the BHPS and the ILFI up to 2005 and uses event history models to investigate changes across four successive birth cohorts in the effect of family responsibilities on women's transitions between paid market work and unpaid family-care work from the time women leave full-time education until they are in their forties. My findings show that in both countries women's attachment to paid work has increased and that education and/or class have marked and still mark the divide, as predicted by human capital theory. However, in line with culturalist and institutional approaches, it also emerges that the effect of motherhood is, ceteris paribus, stronger in a residualist-liberal welfare regime like the British one. In It...

  • The implications of aging of the population in Mexico are complicated and in some respects, serious. Like many other developing countries, Mexico has no genuine state public policies designed to ensure the treatment, everyday care and well-being of senior citizens. In view of this discouraging outlook, it is families, mainly women, who continue to be responsible for looking after senior citizens thereby increasing these women's workloads. The previous situation leads directly to the theme of the work-family link, as a result of which this article contains a proposal constituting an exploratory approach that attempts the simultaneous use of data sources clearly identified with qualitative and quantitative research styles. One of the main objectives of the article is to analyze the interr...

  • This paper, based on ethnographic research in rural villages of Croatia, explores to what extent we can talk about a 'return to tradition' as observed in other studies of transition countries following the collapse of socialism. It asks whether there was ever really a departure, from traditional gendered values and attitudes during socialism and whether these gendered values and attitudes have subsequently been given new meaning in these villages in the post-transition/war period. Principally based on rural women's accounts of their experiences, this paper presents the prevailing gendered values and attitudes by examining cultural patterns, expectations, roles, ideals and practices in these communities and questions whether they stem from the past. Research findings show that gendered v...

  • Children constitute an important target market segment and merit attention from a marketing perspective. The role that children play in making decisions concerning the entire family unit has prompted researchers to direct attention to the study of influence of children. The amount of influence exerted by children varies by product category and stage of the decision making process. For some products, they are active initiators, information seekers, and buyers; whereas for other product categories, they influence purchases made by the parents. The purchasing act is governed by how they have been socialized to act as consumers. Family, peers, and media are key socializing agents for children wherein family-specific characteristics such as parental style, family's Sex Role Orientation (SRO)...
