  • Clinical institutions have embedded their claims to legitimacy in research methodologies focussed on objectivity, replication and enumerative strength ([Ann Oakley], 2000; Hubbard, 1990; [Rosser], 1990). The type of knowledge-making activities in the midwife project that did not draw on these previously validated models escaped scrutiny because they were deemed banal, but also were dismissed because the "knowledge" to be produced was unlikely to impact on the clinical field studied. Our research team of humanities scholars seemed to intensify the sense of the hospital administrations and ethics committees that this research had little legitimate connection to the clinical field to be studied. As the epistemological paradigms were viewed as illegitimate (of uncertain origin and therefore...

  • A two-year study of public school library programs was conducted in one of the largest and most diverse states in the USA-New York. This three-phase study extends previous statewide library impact studies by using multiple research methods with multiple stakeholders to investigate the school library's impact on: (1) student achievement, (2) motivation for learning, and (3) technology use, as well as a range of other variables (e.g., principal-librarian relationship, librarian-teacher collaboration, library services and resources for students with disabilities). This article describes the design, development, testing and validation of online survey instruments used in the first two phases of this research. The article concludes with a number of recommendations for ways in which these ins...

  • Intercultural communicative competence has been widely accepted as the aim of EFL teaching. In order to obtain this competence, Culture teaching must be implemented in the college English teaching. Textbooks have played a very important role in the course of teaching and learning. Textbooks introduce students the cultures of different countries and regions, thus making it convenient for students to exert a relatively remarkable influence on the fostering of students' cultural awareness and competence of intercultural communication. This paper focuses on the content analysis of the cultural content in College English (New) (henceforth, CE (New)).

  • Research on the effects of e-service quality dimensions on customer satisfaction and behavioural intentions has used cross-sectional data from customer surveys. To draw managerial implications, such research assumes that model parameters estimated across service provider customers apply also to the service providers. The current study collects e-service data that fully cross respondents with retailer websites. These crossed data are then used to compare the modelled effects of quality dimensions estimated on the confounded data with those estimated across customers and those estimated across websites. The results provide evidence of considerable inconsistency, suggesting that managers should not rely on conclusions drawn from an analysis of variation across customers.

  • At the end of the 20th century, Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools has appeared. Especially after our country's accession to WTO, the development of Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools has remarkably developed with a larger size appearance over time. As a result, the educational levels constantly improve and educational models increasingly diversify. However, with the profound development of Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools, various new questions emerge. The existing researches have broad discussed and proposed some constructive strategies and suggestions. Thus, those researches concentrate on the existing problems in Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools with specific regional observation and lack of general analysis.

  • Using content analyses, this study examines whether board structure of small listed companies influence their shareholders' wealth. This study focuses on three elements of board structure, namely, board size, board composition and directors' remuneration to examine the relationship between board structure and shareholders' wealth. Shareholders' wealth is measured by the return on investment and earnings per share. The results show that out of the three elements of board structure, board size and board composition play an important role in influencing shareholders' wealth in small listed companies. The results support the findings in earlier studies that large number of directors and the proportion of executive directors in a board would instil better decision-making policy. The results ...

  • We propose that there are three important organizational levers that influence work-related need satisfaction: job design, interpersonal relations, and compensation. Need satisfaction and autonomous motivation have been associated with jobs that are designed to be more interesting and meaningful (Gagné, Senécal, & Koestner, 1997; Millette & Gagné, 2008). They have also been linked to managerial support ([Baard] et al., 2004; Deci et al., 2001; Lynch, Plant, & Ryan, 2005) and transformational leadership (Bono & Judge, 2003), which refers to managers being charismatic, inspirational, and considerate toward subordinates. Controlled motivation, on the other hand, has been associated with the presence of contingent rewards (Deci, Koestner, & Ryan, 1999), deadlines (Amabil...
