In addition to standard T8 lamps and electronic ballasts, a new generation of optimized, "high-efficiency" T8 lamps and electronic ballasts has recently been introduced. Available in a range of energy-saving models, including 30 watt, 25 watt, and 17 watt versions, these products can reduce total system wattage by over 45 percent relative to the use of older T12 fluorescent systems driven by magnetic ballasts, and by as much as 20-30 percent relative to the use of conventional T8 lamps and electronic ballasts. Noise exposure has been the focus of research attention for nearly 40 years, since the classic work by Glass and Singer (1972). Several studies have documented adverse effects of chronic noise exposure on children, including disrupted reading acquisition (Bronzaft & McCarthy, 1975; Evans & Maxwell, 1997), memory impairment (Hygge, Evans, & Bullinger, 2002), and physiological stress responses (Evans, Hygge, & Bullinger, 1995). A culture of inquiry is emerging from research-based information literacy instruction that takes place in school libraries. An ethnographic approach views the culture of inquiry through two lenses: (1) cultural anthropology and an emerging theory of evidence-based information literacy instruction, and (2) Tylor's anthropological definition of culture which serves as a framework to examine the knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, law, and customs of instruction. An emerging theory of information literacy instruction unique to school libraries identifies constructivist learning theory as the knowledge source and evidence-based practice as the underlying belief.
