In total, 108 sites were tested for soil contamination in August 2006 in Flin Flon, nearby Creighton, Sask., Cranberry Portage, Man., and Bakers Narrows Provincial Park in Saskatchewan. Topsoil from selected boulevards, vacant lots, schoolyards, playgrounds and golf courses was tested for metal content, but the study did not include residential yards.
The company plays the card that they can't afford to clean it up or they'd have to shut down," [Joan Kuyek] said. "These old mines in Flin Flon and Sudbury are pretty awful. We know Flin Flon has the highest release of mercury and lead from their smelter in North America.
What the report found: 54 out of 93 test sites in Flin Flon and Creighton exceeded human health standards for mercury, including two Flin Flon schoolyards and nearly 40...

I am writing in response to the editorial that appeared in the Saturday edition of the Winnipeg Free Press entitled Poverty and the family. What planet are you from? How can you be so blatantly blind to the realities of poverty in our city. Take a drive in downtown Winnipeg any day of the week and you will find people who are homeless with nothing to eat, scavenging in dumpsters and dying of exposure in the winter. Yes it does happen here. It doesn't get discussed in the media because we live in a society in which poor people and the homeless do not matter. It is simply not newsworthy when some homeless person dies in the street, unless of course they were murdered and even then only marginally so.
In his explanation of why prime downtown office space sits empty in Winnipeg, Murray McNe...

The Americans are trying to maintain the status quo," she said, "and they're operating under the premise that they're going to lose everything, but that's not reality since they have not even tried a way that would allow sustainability long term. They have to think about technologies and ways of avoiding using fossil fuels," she said.
"Other parts of the world are team players; they're trying to do that. Europe has proven that it can meet its targets. America certainly can, there's no doubt in my mind. The American people are saying that, it's just the Administration that is not. In spite of their government, they are lowering their greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, last year America did better than Canada, despite the administration. That's what I've been doing, working with citizens...
