A relational model of information literacy (Bruce, 1997) has been used as a framework for examining national policies, teacher education, curriculum integration, and assessment issues relating to information literacy and lifelong learning. Initiatives by a range of stakeholders are included to illustrate shared responsibility and support for the educational goals. Successful development of the information and communications technology capacity in schools and extension of technological skills of teachers have yet to be matched in teacher education by explicit, systematic attention to the broader requirements of information literacy. National curriculum documents imply an intention to ensure that information literacy continue to be embedded in essential learning areas, but indications are...

Re: French Quarter? It's no Big Easy, July 10. I'm glad to hear that the French Quarter Business Improvement Zone will be renamed. As far back as I can remember, St. Boniface has been an interesting and appealing place -- in its own right. I never understood the need to promote it as something else. Let's get rid of this city's lingering lack of self confidence once and for all and promote Winnipeg for what it is: vibrant, friendly, and unique.
The editorial Missing the Point, July 10, mentions the "astonishing and extravagant use of electricity" by television watchers of Al Gore's Live Earth concerts. It cites this as one of the "bizarre ironies surrounding this bizarre exercise," along with details of Madonna's home & business ownership and the transportation usage of concert per...

The hippocampus and surrounding regions of the medial temporal lobe play a central role in all neuropsychological theories of memory. It is still a matter of debate, however, how best to characterise the functions of these regions, the hippocampus in particular. In this article, I examine the proposal that the hippocampus is a "stupid" module whose specific domain is consciously apprehended information. A number of interesting consequences for the organisation of memory and the brain follow from this proposal and the assumptions it entails. These, in turn, have important implications for neuropsychological theories of recent and remote episodic, semantic, and spatial memory and for the functions that episodic memory may serve in perception, comprehension, planning, imagination, and prob...
