To improve this situation the McIvor Inquiry recommended creation of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corp. (FFMC) with authority to be the sole buyer and seller of fish caught from western Canadian inland waters. A primary result of this was that FFMC became the price setter into the export market. Fish buyers and exporters were eliminated from the marketing regime. Fishers would and did receive a larger percentage of the selling price of fish and, because of its single desk authority, FFMC has been able to increase the selling price of fish.

Unfortunately, [Joseph-Elzear Bernier] and his famous declaration are largely forgotten today, but the oversight will be corrected on Wednesday when the federal government will pay tribute to his contributions in a ceremony attended by dozens of foreign ambassadors. Bernier also needs to take his proper place in Canadian history as an Arctic explorer and advocate for the country's long-suffering claim to Arctic sovereignty.
