Where an insured has to make a claim under their policy to its insured, the insurer will generally pay the claim, subject to the terms and limitations of the policy, and then seek recovery from the party responsible for the loss. The right of subrogation is one of the most important rights an insurer has and, aside from the policy limit of any particular type of claim, it is one of the most important benefits of an insurance policy.

The data revealed that 15 per cent of Manitobans don't have a regular doctor -- including 46,000 people, or five per cent, who couldn't find one and another 95,000, or 10 per cent, who haven't looked for a regular physician. Family doctors are expected to have a mix of patients, and taking on too many with complex chronic conditions -- or insurance paperwork -- could be overly time-consuming.

This study looks at how farm families coped with the 1998 ice storm in Eastern Ontario, in particular stress and health impacts. It is based on a mail survey (N = 171) and follow-up qualitative interviews with households (N = 40). Beyond the severity of the event, finances were identified as a key factor in reported incidence of stress symptoms during the ice storm, related to uncertainties with insurance claims and arrangements with banks. Afterwards, off-farm income was found to moderate ongoing stress. Although the social resources the farm community utilized in coping with the storm and its aftermath were identified as highly important by respondents, these did not act to differentially moderate the stress and health impacts. Instead, the findings suggest farm families addressed the...

The banks have a captive audience and they're going to sell their products during a very emotional situation when people are going to answer yes, not knowing whether they're going to be the best or not," cautions Mark Halpern, a Certified Financial Planner and founder of illnessPROTECTION.com Inc. in Toronto. "People need to sit down with a competent professional to see how this fits in with overall financial planning.
"She was just floored because she was sure she had it from the first place," says [MaryAnn Kokan-Nyhof]. "Fortunately, he didn't pass away but he can't get insurance any more."
He says the "vast majority" of mortgage life insurance claims get paid, and advises consumers to read through the questions on the application process carefully. "Then, as long as they answer app...

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been brought to the attention of the general public as the result of a combination of events, including the recovered memory debate, Rwanda, the aftermath of residential schools, the attack on the World Trade Center and the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the increase in the number of insurance claims and litigations related to trauma. Treating people with PTSD is a challenging and difficult enterprise, which is no surprise to those who work with traumatized individuals. There is an abundance of literature available on the topic of PTSD, but even a casual perusal of that literature can leave one with a sense of being overwhelmed by the many seemingly disparate theories regarding predisposing factors, comorbidity, etiology, and impor...

It is that time of year again when Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC) members receive their professional liability insurance invoices for the 2011 policy year. The AIC's professional liability insurance provides members with protection against claims resulting from any errors and omissions made in the rendering of professional services. The Institute's professional liability insurance program is mandatory for all active members. The mandatory nature of the program makes it cost effective and enables members to benefit from economies of scale. Insurance premiums are actuarially determined and reflect historical and forecast claims and other risk factors. In recent years, as a result of the downturn in the real estate market both the number and severity of claims has increased substantia...

As a young Canadian who may witness a time when the Arctic melts and smog from the tar sands ends up in my backyard, I want to know exactly what our current government is going to do to prevent our environment from imploding. Short-term economic belt-tightening today is nothing compared to what my children and their children will face tomorrow if they cannot breathe the air or grow food. I don't want to play "Where's Rona?" when the questions get tough. I want a plan, targets and timelines.
In the present civic election campaign, an important issue is being missed by candidates. This is the threatened status of the Canadian Wheat Board with its head office in Winnipeg. The Harper government is determined to change the status of the wheat board to just another marketer of prairie grain,...

Across the country, excessive use of laptops, cellphones, personal digital assistants and other technology has led to such modern-day maladies as "tech neck," "mouse wrist," "iPod finger," "BlackBerry thumb" and "computer headache.
Colleen Lichti spends most of her 40-hour work week on the phone or at the computer, leading to what's known in popular parlance as "tech neck." For nearly four years, the Canadian insurance-claims specialist has been seeing a chiropractor for her "perpetual muscular pain," but finds little empathy for her condition outside the medical community.
When you think of a manual labour type of position, you automatically think of someone who'll have pains and strains," Lichti said. "But when you think of somebody sitting in a chair in an office all day, that (ima...

According to StatsCan, Manitoba's canola crop will be particularly hard hit as the total Prairie canola crop is only expected to decline by eight per cent. Wishart said there have been a record number of claims for crop insurance and a record amount of unharvestable fields that were seeded and then spoiled by the heavy rains.
