Special Olympics Manitoba looking for volunteers in your area to help coach the following sport programs: 5-Pin Bowling, Basketball, Cross-country, Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Swimming and Multi-Sport. Volunteer coaches teach basic motor skills and sport-specific skills to athletes of all ages with an intellectual disability. The time commitment is once a week for one to three hours, with some weekends for competition. Experience is an asset, but not required. Background checks are part of the application screening. The Cunningham Group of RBC Dominion Securities received the Employer of the Year Award at the SCE LifeWorks Golden Plate Gala held Sept. 18 at the Delta Winnipeg. The Cunningham Group received the award for not only hiring an individual labelled with an intellectual disability, but for embracing this person into its work culture as an integral part of the team. Bison Transport also received this award for for its openness to hiring a number of individuals labelled with intellectual disabilities over many years. As well, Kevin Johnson received the Personal Achievement Award. Johnson has been a strong advocate for the rights of individuals labelled with intellectual disabilities.

PEOPLE wanting to play hockey and rub shoulders with a Manitoba Moose icon while helping people with intellectual disabilities can sign up for the inaugural [Mike Keane] Charity Hockey Tournament for Continuity Care. The tournament, which is being held at the MTS Centre Sept. 17, will see adult participants guaranteed to be in three hockey games and receive a replica team jersey. As well, there will be a NHL Wii hockey tournament, lunch, dinner and a charity auction. It costs $350 to participate.
