Also at issue is the lobbying heft of international environmental groups and whether they would make the preservation of the forest the focus of a well-funded global campaign. That's Doer's fear, and the consultants said it's a genuine possibility, especially if First Nations are unanimous and are allied with environmental groups. The consultants' report, which makes no firm recommendations, said building a power line down the east side wouldn't necessarily kill the province's bid for a UNESCO site. And it highlighted some similar environmental issues on the west side that no one has studied properly yet, like a forest reserve near the Saskatchewan River.

The International Criminal Court in the Hague is expected to issue a warrant early in March for the arrest of Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, the first time such a warrant has been issued against a sitting head of state. Mr. al-Bashir is also accused of crimes against humanity, orchestrating campaigns of murder, torture and rape in Darfur. It is unlikely that the warrant will be implemented and the Sudanese president is not about to turn himself in. It may even be that the issuing of the warrant will intensify the very violence it aims to stop. It is a hardly a perfect solution, but in truth there hardly is one of those. At the very least, however, its importance lies in doing something other than sitting aside and cursing the darkness that has enveloped Darfur.

The issue of missing women is a tragedy," the premier said, citing the Amnesty International Report that profiled nine women, including four from Saskatchewan. "Saskatchewan has the highest rate of violence against women," said Judy Hughes, vice-president of the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Women's Circle Corporation (SAWCC). "Violence against Aboriginal women is at a most critical level," she said. In March 2004, NWAC had their official launch of the Sisters in Spirit Campaign in Ottawa in response to the alarmingly high level of violence against First Nation women. Now Saskatchewan is first in Canada to launch the campaign at the provincial level. The launch took place the evening of Dec. 10 at the Best Western in Saskatoon.
Notarius has developed and is managing the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) of the Chambre des notaires du Quebec, now known as the Quebec Certification Centre. This infrastructure delivers secure digital signatures. A digital signature is a personal mark placed in an electronic document by means of a technological process known as asymmetric key cryptography. On Jul 4, 2007, NSF International Strategic Registrations announced the registration of the Notarius-managed PKI for ISO 27001 certification. The role of the Quebec Certification Centre is to issue a digital certificate containing information that has been verified beforehand, confirming the identity and the professional status of the key and certificate holder.

öPolitics: [Hugh McFadyen] and Premier Gary Doer could duke it out for years over this issue -- it's one of a very few times there's been a crystal clear policy distinction between them. McFadyen has staked his party's political comeback partly on the power line catching fire with voters. Meanwhile, Doer is staking his legacy on pragmatic environmentalism, and that includes protecting the boreal forest and selling clean power to whomever will buy it. Plus, being the defender of the forest doesn't hurt his international profile. Doer vowed there won't be a transmission line through the boreal forest that makes up much of Lake Winnipeg's east side. On the contrary, he's pushing for what he has called "the greatest undiscovered area anywhere in North America" to get extra protection as a...
