THE third album from New York's impossibly cool Interpol finds the suit-clad mopesters sounding more menacing than ever, but there's a dark gloss to the production this time out that broadens the band's appeal. El Perro Del Mar is one enormous and beautiful paradox. [Sarah Assbring], a Swedish native, uses a Spanish name (which translates to "The Dog of the Ocean,") and sings in English. She plays in the style of '60s French doo-wop commonly known for its light and airy feel, yet infuses it with polar-opposite morose tones.
Complemented by her own superb backing vocals, Assbring's voice is high-pitched and haunting, especially on the sedative third track, Party, as well as This Loneliness. On tracks like Candy, and Here Comes that Feeling, El Perro Del Mar gets downright cheerful with backing saxophones.
Risk Revival begins with an acoustic guitar intro and a noticeable lack of screaming from vocalist Billy Werner, but that doesn't mean the band has has lost its edge. This intro is just a calm...
