  • An important operational aspect of international business is the coordination of widely dispersed resources of their networks of relationships with partners. Such interdependencies affect their ability to compete and/or create economic wealth. In order to examine the significance of network relationships in alliance capitalism and foreign direct investment (FDI), a network perspective as governance structure is used to examine the effects of resource interdependencies on relationship value. The article provides insights into alliance capitalism of interfirm relations for understanding implications for relationship value and increasing FDI between firms in industrial clusters of small and medium sized firms. On the basis that flows of local and foreign investment could be from internal o...

  • IF you haven't been thinking lately about recruitment and retention, leader succession, or employee training and development, it's probably time you did. After all, if approximately 50 per cent of your workforce is eligible for retirement in the next few years and skilled labour is already reaching high levels of scarcity, what's next? And how do you plan to deal with this pending crisis? Training current employees is no longer simply a "nice to have" perk, it's a critical investment in a strategy that leads to internal promotion, succession planning and employee development. It's an investment in employee productivity and retention by providing for career progression and employee job satisfaction over the long term. And finally, a strong internal employee-development program in and of...

  • AFP and PFI transactions are essentially an outgrowth of the public-private partnership (or P3) model, but even this basic concept lacks kind of clear definition. In a sense, any arrangement which involves a government player and a private sector player may be described as a kind of public-private partnership. However, if the term is given such a broad definition, it is difficult to identify any kind of supply arrangement that would not satisfy the requirement. In commerce and law, the term "partnership" has long had a clearly settled meaning. It describes the conduct by two or more persons of a business in common with a view towards profit. Relatively few P3 arrangements come close to meeting this definition. The term "alternative financing and procurement" appears to have originated i...

  • Canadian policy makers have repeatedly emphasized improving relations with Brazil as a strategic objective in the Americas. Given past failures to cooperate, this objective may be difficult to realize. We argue that one of the reasons for this unrealized relationship between Canada and Brazil within hemispheric institutions is different national approaches to the role and purpose of multilateralism. This argument is advanced through an analysis of national interpretations of each country's engagement with multilateralism, drawing on the local literatures. The paper concludes with a discussion of the prospects and limits of future multilateral cooperation between the two countries, drawing on examples from the Inter-American System.

  • China has emerged as the most dynamic FDI-host country in the world, and the impact of FDI on the Chinese economy has burgeoned in ways that no one anticipated. This paper focuses on four issues: (a) the factors behind the FDI boom; (b) how China has succeeded in utilizing FDI so far; (c) China's FDI strategy; and (d) its future development. China's special advantages in attracting and using FDI come from three sources: the huge market with cheap labour, the large number of rich overseas Chinese as investors, and the effective FDI strategy and policy implemented by the central government. Whether or not China will be a winner in future depends on how it balances between technology transfers and domestic market protection.
