  • Following a hugely successful inaugural event, organizers of the International Metisfest are expecting it to be bigger and better this year. About 7,000 people, from both Canada and the United States, took part in the 2009 Metisfest. "We're going to double that and there's a possibility of tripling it," says Dan Goodon, one of the organizers for the 2010 Métisfest, which will be staged Aug. 26-29. As was the case for the inaugural event, this year's Métisfest will be held at the International Peace Garden, which is situated on the Canada/United States border between Manitoba and North Dakota. The purpose of Métisfest is rather simple - to bring Métis people together to revel in their cultural and historical ties while enjoying plenty of entertainment such as fiddling, jigging and dancin...

  • They told me they'd get back to me and I'm waiting and time is ticking," [David McDougall] said Monday. "I don't want to panic anybody (but) at the same time I need to have some indication of what's going to happen. By comparison, McDougall said Sandy Lake First Nation -- across the Ontario border from his Island Lake region -- "stopped flu in its tracks" by administering Tamiflu from Ontario's stockpile to anyone with H1N1 symptoms. "Schools might be closed down. That's one way of limiting it," said Dr. Bunmi Fatoye, Manitoba's acting chief public health officer. "We can't say until we see how the disease will play out in the fall."

  • Consisting of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, Canada's Atlantic region defines itself by the Atlantic Ocean. Its various forms of coastline consists of bays, tidal inlets, rivers, and other streams connecting land to sea. All of the provinces are 'maritime' in the sense that they are directly connected by coastal frontage to the sea. The littoral, to the mean high water mark on the shore front, is within the jurisdiction of the federal government and applies to all tidal shorefronts. As with the appraisal of many other income-producing, investment real estate properties that are labor intensive and involve capital personal property components, the appraisal will initially focus upon the business(es) that will be carried on at the site. If the purpose o...

  • We need to set up a temporary hospital base right within the region, that is what's urgently needed," Garden Hill Chief David Harper said Wednesday, referring to the Island Lake region that includes three other First Nations communities, including St. Theresa Point. Garden Hill has only a nursing station that shares a doctor with a neighbouring community. "Whatever it takes," he said. "We're in a war zone, we have to protect (our community). Especially our children and our elderly. "We certainly understand how difficult it is to stay away and not visit when someone is in hospital, but we're really asking that people who might have the flu certainly should not come if they've had the flu within the previous seven days," said Jan Currie, vice-president of the WRHA. Parents should also a...

  • What do the results of the past year tell us? In general, the employment trends in 2004-2005 underscore the fact that the BC economy is thriving. During this time, 67,800 new jobs were created provincially, with the Mainland/Southwest, Thompson-Okanagan, and Vancouver Island/Coast DRs accounting for the majority. All but one development region experienced their strongest employment growth rates in at least five years.

  • The federal health minister's claim First Nations are adequately supplied for a widespread outbreak of H1N1 this fall is "nonsense," says one Manitoba chief. Garden Hill and St. Theresa Point were hit hard by H1N1 in May and June. Hundreds of people were sick in the two reserves, and dozens of patients were flown to Winnipeg for emergency medical treatment. Manitoba sent several doctors to the Island Lake region to help out.

  • Farfetched scenario? Not on Pulau Jerejak, a tiny island of lush jungle terrain in the Straits of Malacca, within swimming distance of Penang. As recently as 1993, Malaysia's version of Devil's Island housed some of the country's most dangerous criminals in brutally harsh conditions. Surrounded by dense tropical jungle, Jerejak Resort offers guests a range of outdoor activities, including abseiling, rock climbing, mountain biking, fishing, jungle trekking, camping under the stars, and wildlife watching. Jerejak is home to the majestic white-bellied sea eagle, among other rare flora and fauna. Thrill seekers can get an adrenalin rush traversing a swaying steel suspension bridge or zipping in a "flying fox'' over a ravine where giant monitor lizards and snakes watch from below. And where ...

  • The Harper government claims that it is keen to develop a strong policy towards Latin America. Yet it is a flawed approach, supporting US policy at a time when it is at its lowest point in decades, while ignoring both a clear leftward swing of elected Latin American governments in the last five years and the significant importance of Cuba in the region. This paper examines the Harper government's approach to Cuba. Following some general comments on the evolution of Canadian policy towards revolutionary Cuba, it examines some of the errors in the Harper approach, suggests an explanation for the approach employed, and makes suggestions about policies that Ottawa should consider to improve relations. In sports terms, Cuba "punches above its weight"-a fact which is known widely in Latin Ame...

  • Wouldn't you know it, by the time you're finished your second glass of wine, made incidentally by the cab driver from his own grapes, you've already met a half dozen other villagers who have worked in Canada. You're on a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and suddenly it seems like old home week. If you're open to the gloriously unexpected, this is the spot for you. Like its sister islands, Sao Jorge rumbled up out of the ocean floor in a crucible of volcanic action an estimated six million years ago. From west to east, the islands stretch about 600 kilometres and are divided into three groups: the western islands of Corvo and Flores, the central islands of Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial islands and the eastern islands of Santa Maria and Sao Miguel, the large...
