  • It is surely not to audacious to infer that Germans leave the parental home while still in education more than Italians because they have additional means to do so. Not only their parents, as in Italy, might support them, in addition students' subsidizes and training wages represent an additional (if not even the main) source of income. This relative economic independence from parents might facilitate the achievement of residential independence, or at least it increases their "bargain power" vis-a-vis their parents. Moreover, also the employment conditions of young people in Italy and West-Germany are quite different. The youth unemployment rate is always higher in Italy than in West-Germany. Yet, while in the mid '80s the Italian rate was Only' twice as much as the West-German's, in th...

  • After Garibaldi, it was an uneasy truce that existed between the city of Rome, the Vatican's rule over its own Christian empire, and the embryonic Italian nation. Genuine peace would not come until the Vatican was given control over its own territory in the heart of Rome. Overlooking vineyards, you can choose to relax or spend your days travelling to the larger nearby tourist cities like Siena. Siena comes to you right out of the Middle Ages. It's famous cathedral was built in the 12th century, and twice a year in its central plaza, called the Piazza del Compo, perhaps the most dangerous horse race in the world takes place as riders from 10 adjoining neighboorhoods race for pride and preservation of history two times around this relatively small circle, as thousands cheer from the insid...

  • This study compares two countries: Italy and Britain. It examines data from the BHPS and the ILFI up to 2005 and uses event history models to investigate changes across four successive birth cohorts in the effect of family responsibilities on women's transitions between paid market work and unpaid family-care work from the time women leave full-time education until they are in their forties. My findings show that in both countries women's attachment to paid work has increased and that education and/or class have marked and still mark the divide, as predicted by human capital theory. However, in line with culturalist and institutional approaches, it also emerges that the effect of motherhood is, ceteris paribus, stronger in a residualist-liberal welfare regime like the British one. In It...

  • In the last decade, an increasing number of analyses of accounting history literature have been undertaken to classify historical research paths and to "map" the variety of approaches and issues of the discipline in different geographical settings so as to make international comparisons. The paper develops these topics in the Italian context by studying the development of accounting history research (AHR) in the last 15 years. Contributions by Italian authors have been published in international and national specialist journals as well as in more general accounting journals. Other papers have been presented and published in the proceedings of the biannual SISR (Società Italiana di Storia della Ragioneria) Congress and in the Congress celebrating the 500th anniversary of the publication ...

  • We also toured around Tuscany, venturing south to Sienna and north to Florence to browse in some of the exhaustive number of clothing stores where [Mieke] had a field day. We also admired Florence's architecture such as its famed and strikingly large Duomo cathedral, and works of art such as the statue of Michelangelo's David in Galleria dell'Accademia. After travelling south to Rome, we spent three days at Sogni D'oro, a B&B just south of the city near the ancient ruins of Ostia Antica. As we drove there, bouncing down a dirt road past a few dilapidated buildings and along a high wall topped with barbed wire, the kids said in unison, "This looks sketchy." We weren't sure what we were getting into when we stopped at an iron gate and buzzed the intercom. As the gate slowly opened we ...

  • A week after returning from two months in Italy, I find myself the victim of culture shock in my own country. It's difficult to settle back into a "normal" day-to-day life after an experience in which I was obliged to adjust to Italian culture, language and style. While I didn't run away with a cappuccino-drinking boy on a Vespa (though not for lack of trying), I did manage to find plenty of adventures in my two months. Now back in Winnipeg, I realize I left a part of my heart in Italy. And - don't tell my mom - I think I want to go back. Being an au pair is an opportunity available to anyone my age with a sense of adventure and a strong desire to get out of town. I'm not sure I'd rush back to life with two little boys, but the thought of being back in Italy is tempting. Everyone should...
