Sydney, located on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, is home to a chemical soup known as the Sydney Tar Ponds - called, rightly or wrongly, the worst toxic waste site in Canada. In 2004, Canada and Nova Scotia committed $400 million to jointly cleanup the Tar Ponds and the Coke Ovens with a new provincial agency, the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency, managing the project. The Joint Action Group established by Canada's federal, provincial and municipal governments tries its hand in developing a solution to clean tar ponds in Sydney, Australia. Several attempts have been made in the past but to no avail. The group received $1.67 million in funding for the project.
