Boyd's detailed assessment of the language of fathers' rights advocates (and their often sympathetic treatment in the media) identifies eight themes in their presentations to the committee: the promotion of "traditional families," the problems of absent fathers and single parent mothers, inappropriate actions by mothers (including dishonest tactics and financial greed), a vilification of "feminism," the bias of the legal system "against fathers and for mothers," the unfairness of legal child support obligations, an insistence on formal equality between parents (without regard to its impact on children), and recommendations for shared parenting, joint custody and paternal custody.

Parents with sole or joint custody are normally advised at customs that they need a notarized letter from the other parent confirming their knowledge of and consent to the trip. Judges usually look at a number of factors, such as the reason for the move, the opportunities for the parent and the children in the new area, the nature of the relationship with the parent left behind, the presence of extended family, the ages of the children, etc.
