A unrelated third resolution, this one coming from several Winnipeg ridings, calls on Manitoba's New Democrats to urge Ottawa to apologize and exonerate the leaders of the Winnipeg General Strike. Many were arrested, prosecuted and jailed during that pivotal chapter in the country's labour history.
Another resolution focuses more on the modern era by calling on party members to pressure the province to introduce anti-scab legislation to prohibit the use of replacement workers during a strike. The resolution states only British Columbia and Quebec have such anti-scab legislation, and as a result, have seen a decrease in the number and duration of strikes. Similar resolutions have been passed by grassroots party members for almost 25 years but rejected by the government. If passed, a reso...

Jim Clark's analysis on tuition fee increases is flawed (Tuition hike paltry, April 18). Pinning Manitoba tuition fees to the national average is a cop-out. Since when is the average a goal? This is an incredibly irresponsible approach to the fees and funding debate. As a professor of psychology, Clark should be aware that an average is a statement of a relationship, not the norm. Making something normative is a value judgement -- in this case, a political decision about priorities. It may be convenient to ignore the most inconvenient figure (Quebec's ongoing commitment to low tuition fees), but it's not honest. Removing the outliers requires trimming the lowest and the highest extremes from the equation. The fact that Clark removed Quebec (lowest tuition fees) from his calculations and...
