[Derek Holt] was happy to lump the Manitoba economy in with the relatively upbeat forecast for Western Canada, even though there are some glaring anomalies.
Whereas labour shortages are creating bottlenecks in Alberta, Manitoba still lags in seventh place in employment growth. Holt said Manitoba is also feeling the pinch of the shortage of skilled labour and that is hampering employment growth.
RBC's research indicates Manitoba will have the second-highest increase in public capital spending in 2007.

This puts us back in the high range of expectations measured in the past five years, which suggests good prospects for the economy for the rest of this year and into next," said federation chief economist Ted Mallett.
Concerns about labour shortages are "off the charts," in Alberta, Mallett said in an interview.
"Carrying on a two-year trend, businesses in British Columbia and Alberta lead their eastern counterparts in confidence by a sizable margin," it said. Confidence indexes in both provinces are near historical highs of close to 120, and more than eight points higher than the reading in the next most positive province, Nova Scotia.

One day, a new piece of machinery landed on the shop floor. His supervisor tossed him the instruction manual and said, "It's supposed to be a lot faster than the old machine. I don't have time to show you how it works -- read the manual and get busy. We need 10 units finished and out the door by Friday.
The reason [MIKE] tossed the safety manual aside was that he couldn't read it. He represents one of the 753,000 Albertans who do not have the literacy skills needed to function fully in today's knowledge-based economy. Sure, Mike could read basic words, but he didn't have the literacy skills necessary to comprehend the instruction manual for a sophisticated piece of machinery.
The first relates to labour shortages. The province is desperately short of workers, yet no one seemed to notic...

China has experienced pressing energy shortages in recent years, and Beijing has intensified its efforts to secure China's energy supply through both increased domestic production and external expansion. In this paper, I first analyze China's global quest for energy by looking at the correlation between China's economic growth and its energy security concerns. I then examine the implications of China's "go-out" strategy through two sets of case studies. I argue that China's global search for energy is primarily driven by its rapid economic growth, out of insecurity rather than a master plan to dominate the world, and that China's energy security issues have multiple implications beyond simple economic concerns. Finally, I recommend a forward-looking engagement policy to be adapted by Ca...

Priszm Income Fund (TSX:QSR.UN), owner of 484 KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Long John Silver's restaurants, is putting its investors on a diet, selling 120 outlets and shutting 25 money-losing locations.
This has been a difficult year that to date has not met my expectations," [John Bitove Jr.] told a conference call. "With higher chicken costs, labour shortages out West and a mixed reaction to our trans-fat programs, our team has faced obstacles on almost every level.
Sales at restaurants open a year or more fell 4.7 per cent as "the national KFC promotions in the quarter did not drive anticipated incremental sales," stated Priszm, which has locations in seven provinces.
