[Chris Mattson] doesn't care that his wife is black. He doesn't care if her wealthy and powerful father give them his blessing. Chris is a man desperate to prove he's moved beyond stereotypes and prejudice, but his well-advertised racial emancipation is put to the test when he meets his new neighbour, Abel Turner (Samuel L. Jackson).
At times, the movie even has a comic inflection -- and while that's all part of [Neil LaBute]'s strange, surreal style, it's guaranteed to leave the audience in emotional limbo for the duration.
Given the moment we're living in, LaBute's movie should feel timely and brave, but in many ways, it feels dated. Jackson spouts rhetoric from the 1960s, while [Patrick Wilson] and Washington feel like castoffs from a SSRq70s sitcom.
... as a central device, Neil LaBute's Lakeview Terrace is not your average psychological thriller...

Burn After Reading: This year's Oscar-winners Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men) cast Oscar-winners and box-office superstars alike in this comedy about a CIA veteran (John Malkovich) who finds himself in trouble when his secret-ridden memoirs end up in the hands of a couple of health-club boobs (Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt). Also starring Tilda Swinton and George Clooney, both from last year's Michael Clayton. Swinton won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in that movie. (Sept. 12)
W: The last time director Oliver Stone offered up a portrait of a disgraced president, the result was Nixon, a surprisingly sympathetic portrait of the only president to resign from the office. It's doubtful this film bio of George W. Bush (played by No Country for Old Men star Josh B...

In TV and , Batman has been rendered in tones of camp, Gothic-punk, and homo-erotic kitsch. Director Christopher Nolan takes the Batman mythology seriously enough to play it straight and Nolan's take nicely dovetails with the late Heath Ledger's interpretation of The Joker as a disfigured, fearless sociopath with an anarchist's agenda. Starting Friday, the movie's outsize action sequences play even bigger in IMAX format. HHHH
Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan are a pair of strangers compelled to do the bidding of a mysterious, seemingly omniscient woman who uses scarily smart technologies to drive them into one devastating scenario after another. As with Disturbia, director DJ Caruso is basically enabling exec producer Steven Spielberg's B-movie ideas. Fortunately, that's more f...

IN TV and , Batman has been rendered in tones of camp, Gothic-punk, and homoerotic kitsch. Director Christopher Nolan, continuing with the franchise he effectively re-ignited with Batman Begins, takes the Batman mythology seriously enough to play it straight and Nolan's take nicely dovetails with the late Heath Ledger's interpretation of The Joker as a disfigured, fearless sociopath with an anarchist's agenda (as opposed to Jack Nicholson's self-parodying buffoon in [Tim Burton]'s 1989 Batman). ON the eve of her impending matrimony, the daughter (Amanda Seyfried) of a strong-willed single mom (Meryl Streep) has invited three of her mom's old boyfriends (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard) to the wedding in a scheme to determine the identity of her biological fathe...

Let's just say My Name is [Bruce Campbell] doesn't defy the odds. ''
IF this Ridley Scott-directed thriller achieves nothing else, it nails the portrayal of Donald Rumsfeld-era recklessness and arrogance in the U.S.'s incursion in the Middle East. Those qualities are embodied by Russell Crowe's bourgeois spymaster Ed Hoffman, a guy who quarterbacks intelligence policy in Washington via headset while toilet-training his kids. Half a world away, CIA field agent Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio) attempts to build alliances and protect embattled intelligence sources in tracking down an elusive, bin Laden-like terrorist mastermind. Hoffman, unfortunately, is proudly callous in using and abandoning informants and he urges his protege to be the same way: "We want nailers, we don't want hangers....

This doc, which is set to air next week on the Canadian cable station Encore Action, takes the franchise seriously enough that it passionately answers questions most sane people would never ask. (Resolved: Kane Hodder was the Best Jason Ever.) Mercifully, it is also upfront about the franchise's more ludicrous excesses, which include Jason Vorhees boating from Crystal Lake to Manhattan via cruise ship in Jason Takes Manhattan, or Jason transforming into a worm (with no regard for people's personal spaces) in Jason Goes to Hell, or Jason literally becoming a killing machine when he is shot into outer space in Jason X.
That doesn't save the movie. When [Zack] and Miri do go before the cameras, they and their entire crew learn that true love doesn't make good porn. But bad porn, in this ca...
