All it takes is that one hurricane to make for a bad year," [Max Mayfield] said, recalling Aug. 24, 1992, when the season's first named storm, Andrew, slammed Miami-Dade County as a Category 5 hurricane. With winds of 165 mph, Andrew is still one of only three Category 5 storms to make landfall in the United States, and it was the costliest hurricane in U.S. history until Katrina hit last year. In the days before then, "I remember the media kept calling and saying, 'When are we going to have a hurricane?"' Mayfield said. "Believe me, no one would be happier on the face of the Earth than if I got up in front of people (at the end of the season) and said, 'We messed up the forecast. Sorry about that, we're going to try and figure out why."'

Nearly a third of the soldiers who committed suicide did so while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, according to a report released Thursday. Iraq accounted for most of those -- with 27 of the suicides coming from that conflict and three from Afghanistan. Also, there were 948 attempted suicides, officials said, adding that they didn't have a comparison for previous years. The fire started on the slopes of Mount Penteli and strong winds blew fast-moving flames toward the capital's wealthy northern suburbs of Politia, Melissia, Nea Penteli and Vrilissia.

Among the most provocatively beautiful properties is the Jalousie Plantation, once the site of an 18th-century sugar-mill estate. The place (formerly a Hilton) is perched in the Valley of the Pitons, and is being treated to a lavish multimillion-dollar reno. Set amidst more than 130 hectares of glossy rain forest, villas painted cheerful shades of conch-shell pink and periwinkle look like the time shares of some resident tooth fairies. Each pastel pile is surrounded with a green tangle of soursop, mango and breadfruit trees and is landscaped with its own miniature splash pool, spoiling visitors with photogenic views of the looming Pitons and Eden Bay beyond.
