  • I am chairman of the Manitoba branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). Thanks to organizer David Myers, every two years or so we arrange a round table with two highly qualified Canada Revenue Agency team leaders, Barbara Knoll and Earl Standil. This year they were joined by several other CRA officials, on the occasion of commemorating Mr. Standil's pending retirement. We wish him all the best. We asked about inflated-receipt charitable donation schemes, refiling estate and terminal tax returns where omissions or mistakes have been made, the rules about alter-ego trusts, donations of flow-through shares, the application of the principal residence exemption to a spouse who is not inheriting the house but will live there either under the terms of a trust, life tenan...

  • Key sources for accounting historians are published reports on censuses of population and the surviving enumeration books on which they were based. The increasing availability of electronic versions of census enumeration books (CEB) for Canada, the UK, and the US offers opportunities for better understanding the history of occupations concerned with the performance of accounting functions. However, census reports and original census documents must be interpreted critically. A study reports on a study of accountants appearing in the transcribed version of the British CEBs for 1881. It is shown how the published census underreported the number of accountants in Britain and suggests that there are potential inconsistencies in the manner in which accountants were counted. • This study investigates tattoo removal as a means of identity negotiation using Brewer's (1991) optimal distinctiveness theory as the conceptual foundation. Twenty-two informants who ranged in age from 19 to 43 participated in in-depth interviews telling their stories of tattoo acquisition and removal. Findings unpack the relationship between consumption, disposition, and the different aspects of the self-concept. Informants who felt overly individuated (or assimilated) in a frequently activated social identity group because of tattoo acquisition, compensated for this conflict by enhancing feelings of affiliation (or differentiation) in another frequently activated social identity via tattoo removal. This study extends previous research on the role of consumption in shaping the maintena...

  • Recent studies of publication patterns in accounting history portray a myopic and introspective discipline. Analyses reveal the production and dissemination of accounting history knowledge which focus predominantly on Anglo-American settings and the age of modernity. Limited opportunities exist for contributions from scholars working in languages other than English. Many of the practitioners of accounting history are also shown to be substantially disconnected from the wider community of historians. It is argued in the current paper that interdisciplinary history has the potential to enhance theoretical and methodological creativity and greater inclusivity in the accounting history academy. A practical requirement for this venture is the identification of points of connectedness between...
