Butterfly's maid, Suzuki, was the glorious-voiced Canadian mezzo-soprano Lauren Segal. Possessing a range that would challenge any alto, Segal has a wonderful instrument. Her tone flows like heavy cream. An accomplished actress, her fierce loyalty to Butterfly was eminently convincing.
Gregory Atkinson filled the hall with his powerful bass voice as the blusteringly redoubtable the Bonze, Butterfly's uncle. Bass David Watson's rich, penetrating singing graced dual roles -- Imperial Commissioner and Prince Yamadori. Winnipeg soprano Jennifer Sproule was an adept Kate.
Alan Rusnak's set from New Orleans Opera was an impressive traditional Japanese house, complete with sliding paper shoji forming movable walls. This provided an ideal palette for Bill Williams' imaginative lighting. Who ...

Simon Thomsen, Greg Samek, Christa Mercey and Spencer Cole joined [Gregory Kozak] for a breathtakingly athletic performance at Thursday night's penultimate WSO New Music Festival concert named for the ensemble. An audience heavy on young people thrilled to the sights, sounds and moves of this truly original group that shows there are no limits to the musical imagination.
Vancouverite Kozak co-founded and created ScrapArtsMusic in 1998 with Justine Murdy. Kozak, self-described as "a percussion virtuoso with a talent for welding," designed and built the 145-plus instruments the quintet plays, composed the music and choreography. Murdy handles lighting, instrument and costume design -- black outfits with armbands, which could double as supportive braces for the percussion boot camp.

The musical that just won't quit has been performed in nine languages and seen by more than 17 million people worldwide. It will celebrate its 10-year anniversary as a revival on the Great White Way in November. Fred Ebb's book and John Kander's sizzling music are as fresh as ever.
A solid cast packed with triple-threat singers/hoofers/actors performs the 150-minute show, including several numbers not usually heard. This is a consciously different production from the film, with John Lee Beatty's minimal set and Ken Billington's suggestive lighting intensifying the feeling of entrapment. Ann Reinking's tight choreography pays high-kicking homage to her mentor Bob Fosse.

One of the most-loved and spirited duets of all time, Brindisi Libiamo ne' lieti calici satisfyingly appears early on, with Violetta and admirer Alfredo making a toast. Puerto Rican soprano Yali-Marie Williams (Violetta) was superb, possessing a refined, pure voice. She crafts each note, and finishes them with a flourish.
Williams was the clear star of the show, her voice full of subtle power, supremely accurate and impressively versatile. From the touching Addio! Del passato, in which she floated effortlessly to the highest notes, to the heart-rending duet, Dite all giovane, with Alfredo's father Germont (Theodore Baerg), where, kneeling on the ground, she agrees to give up Alfredo, her sensitive interpretation touched us all.

A study examines a sample of 13 accounts from the bursar's office at Durham Cathedral Priory covering the period 1278-1398. Sources of receipts, types of expenditure, and the format of the accounts have been described. An analysis of the accounts has allowed the calculation of the net surplus or deficit generated each year. This has revealed that once uncollected arrears have been excluded from receipts, the net surplus or deficit was of a very modest amount, and it appears that actual receipts and expenditure were very closely matched, indicating careful monitoring of the cash position. The accounts are largely concerned with receipts and expenditure, but an awareness of balance sheet issues is evidenced by the survival of schedules listing debtors and creditors. These and other schedu...
