Of course, we're talking about sprinter Justin Gatlin and his American compatriot, Tour de France winner Floyd Landis, now both embroiled in their own drug scandals. Come on, folks, you'd have to be living on the planet Stanozolol not to realize that the world of sports is, and has long been, riddled with drug cheats -- regardless of the ultimate fate of Landis and Gatlin. So why should we be shocked to learn that Gatlin's coach, Trevor Graham, also was involved with the careers of track stars Marion Jones and disgraced former world record-holder Tim Montgomery, both embroiled in the BALCO steroid scandal?
It's not Tim Connell's comments (No attack intended, Feb. 19) I object to as much as I am disturbed by his ill-informed opinion. If Connell had backed up his opinion with fact or some proof, I would have no problem with his comments. If Connell had stated he has intimate knowledge stemming from the fact he has many neighbours who are recently relocated from Pukatawagan, or that he has a study that proves this behaviour, that would be opinion backed by fact. However, he offers no proof of his opinion, which places it squarely in the realm of stereotyping. Perhaps we are forgetting the ecological devastation wrought upon the homelands of Northern Manitoba's Cree people by Manitoba Hydro's projects of the 1960s and 1970s, wiping out viable fisheries, silting clear waters, erosion of shorel...

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A couple of weeks ago, The New York Times's Jim Yardley reported from China that the world's last known female Yangtze giant soft-shell turtle was living in one Chinese zoo, while the planet's only undisputed, known giant soft-shell male turtle was living in another -- and together this aging pair were the last hope of saving a species believed to be the largest freshwater turtles in the world. Unlike Noah, though, we're also the ones causing The [Flood], as more and more forests, fisheries, rivers and fertile soils are gobbled up for development. "The loss of global biological diversity is advancing at an unprecedented pace," Sigmar Gabriel, Germany's environment minister, recently told the BBC. "Up to 150 species are becoming extinct every day. The web of life th...

A paraplegic marine (Sam Worthington) is recruited to pilot the body of a genetically engineered extraterrestrial as a means of infiltrating and colonizing their world. The plot may be familiar but Cameron's approach -- featuring a gorgeous, fully realized alien planet -- is the main attraction here. See it in 3D (at Grant Park, Polo Park and St. Vital) if you can. '''' The Oscar-nominated Jeff Bridges stars as the hard-living, hard-drinking country singer Bad Blake, a man seeking redemption with the help of a sympathetic journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal). It's being called this year's The Wrestler because of Bridges' excellent performance but it's true ancestry hearkens back to the 1983 film Tender Mercies, probably explaining the reason why that film's star Robert Duvall is present in th...
When designing this area, the issue was, 'How do you like living here,' " [Jones] says. "As a family, this was where we lived -- in the kitchen, family room and sun room; the Jacuzzi room was a nice bonus. There's lots of glass all around to ensure that no matter where you are, you have a good view of the river. The fireplace in the family room is two-sided. You can enjoy it in the family room, or while in for a soak. "The ensuite is just over the top, but in a very good way," he says. "First, you've got a huge jetted tub set beneath a big window for an incredible river view. The beige ceramic tile floor is heated for year-round comfort, and you've also got an oversized shower with clear tempered glass enclosure, cappuccino-stained maple cabinets, and separate sinks on either side of ...
