It has to be part of a complete package," [Andrew Marquess] said. "It (installing a geothermal system) only makes sense if you're doing a total retrofit or new construction. It is the first "district" or "community" geothermal system in Manitoba -- where a multitude of buildings are served by one geothermal system. According to the Manitoba Geothermal Energy Alliance, a consortium of industry stakeholders, it is also the largest residential complex in the province using geothermal heat and cooling. The $25-million project involves two apartment blocks and 16 three-storey townhouse complexes on 3.3 hectares of land. (See map) B & M Land, a Winnipeg company formed in 2002. Through periods of population stagnation and decline, Manitoba's rent control policies have worked well. (Or more accurately, rent control's failings have been more easily ignored.) But with a modest population growth in Winnipeg in recent years, mostly through international immigration and migration from First Nations, the inherent problems of rent control are coming to the surface. Other factors have led to the exasperation of rental properties. A period of low interest rates have created a resurgent real estate market, and the increased costs of houses have sent buyers either to "down market" neighbourhoods (Wolseley instead of River Heights, West Broadway instead of Wolseley), or to buying condominiums instead of detached houses. This has led to the reduction of rental properties in...

In 1985, the first newspaper articles began appearing describing the "looming presence of poverty and attendant crime" in West Broadway. A May 1, 1985 article in the Free Press ("The poor and trendy meet on the street") described the transition to poverty beginning to happen. The article quoted Larry Leroux who reported that his pharmacy had three armed robberies and three break ins in the last year. He felt the establishment of a soup kitchen at Broadway Community Club was bringing transient people into the neighbourhood. The arrival of crack cocaine didn't help. Nelson praised the renovated house for its quietness, its privacy, its security. "It'...

Many contemporary immigrants belong to transnational families-families that maintain significant contact with two or more countries. These families identify with multiple environments and deal with life-cycle changes over extensive geographical space. This paper has two major aims: 1) to better understand how today's immigrant families facilitate intergenerational relationships across significant distances; and 2) to learn more about the understudied population of recent immigrant professionals from Eastern Europe in the United States. To accomplish mese aims, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 24 immigrant mothers and fathers from Eastern European countries residing in the United States. Based on grounded theory methodology, we identified four themes: (1) The definitio...
