Though he intends to go to Athens, Aristotle's plans change when he stops in the Macedonian capital of Pella to visit its king and his boyhood friend, Philip, who asks him to stay and help educate his son, Alexander. Though most of the book focuses on Aristotle's time in Pella, it is interspersed with scenes from his boyhood in the town of Stageira and his student years in Athens. And though the novel is grounded in historical sources, [Annabel Lyon] has no problem taking liberties with the record. Whether or not this stinging indictment invalidates Aristotle's ideas is a question best left to the philosophers. But for those looking for the human side of Aristotle's life and thought, The Golden Mean is a touching work of historical imagination.

We are deliberately trying to create that dilemma," says [Tom Lycos], 45. "We could play the kids so the audience would vote guilty in the end or not guilty. We try to play the line so people don't know. I think it's good to create that confusion and debate among the kids themselves. "I try to bottle the energy," says Nantsou, the product of Macedonian parents who emigrated to Australia. "I'm going for that wild, unrestrained energy." "In the old days coppers would give the kid a slap in the head and scare the hell out of him so much he wouldn't do it again," Nantsou says. "Nowadays that copper would be hauled up in court. A common quote of kids in Australia when they get in trouble is, "You can't do anything to me, I know my rights.'"

Revolutionary it isn't, but his heart's in the right place. Here's hoping he finds the true love he's so obviously looking for. Viva the revolution. Detours, which happily reunites the singer with her Tuesday Night Music Club producer Bill Bottrell, starts off with the old-fashioned folk tune God Bless This Mess, where [SHERYL CROW] laments the state of the world over a simple acoustic guitar. It's lovely and affecting -- something that can't be said for the misguided Gasoline, a strident, overly literal protest song (even if you agree with Crow's politics, you'll wish she tried her hand at a metaphor now and again). IN the 1960s Canadian rock 'n' roll was frustratingly fragmented into regional music scenes, each with its own distinct character and sound (eg. "The Boss Sound" from Toron...
