What all this is leading to is that you can't simply assume if an American company traded in New York in U.S. dollars, the currency risk is exactly the same as the U.S. dollar currency risk," he says. "Therefore, if you buy into the Dow and hedge it by engaging in some transaction on foreign-currency markets, you might not be alleviating the risk as much as you thought.
"A million dollars in U.S. dollar bonds is a million dollars in U.S. dollar bonds," [David Sharp] says. "The U.S. dollar goes up. The value of the bond goes up when measured in Canadian dollars."
"He bet against the pound, and the U.K. treasury said, 'We've got tons of money. We can support the pound,'" Sharp says. "He looked around at the rest of the world and the macroeconomics and said, 'No, you can't,' and sold pou...

This study proposes a forecasting method that combines the clustering effect and non-informative diffuse-prior Bayesian vector autoregression (NDBVAR) model to forecast the productions of technology industries. Two empirical cases are examined to verify the proposed method: the semiconductor industry and computer manufacturing industry in Taiwan. It is found that the NDBVAR model outperforms the other three conventional time series models including the autoregression (AR), vector autoregression (VAR), and Litterman Bayesian VAR (LBVAR) models. Moreover, the NDBVAR model also outperforms the forecast reports from leading market information providers over the past several years. The forecasting method proposed is therefore concluded to be a feasible approach for production prediction, esp...

Essentially, CMA president Dr. Brian Day, like Prof. [Jeffrey Sachs], is arguing that inefficient health care does not make "economic sense." Regardless of whether Dr. Day's primary intention is to improve the health of patients or to generate support for privatized health services, he is effectively promoting a rather perverse ethic: that good health is a means to economic growth rather than an end in itself. In other words, the report's focus on economic productivity diminishes the importance of health as a fundamental human right.
