Manitoba's list of persons disqualified from serving on a jury is not that long. It includes our elected federal and provincial politicians, judges, lawyers, peace officers and others involved in the justice system. However, the real issue in Manitoba is that we may have a de facto exemption for our working population generally. This flows from the fact that jury trials in Manitoba are reserved for serious criminal cases and these invariably are lengthy trials. A short jury trial does not exist. The jury trials this fall are scheduled for between five and 30 days. Many people simply cannot afford to take this time off work to serve on a jury, unless their wages are covered.
